Remembering Your Roots!

Hello Bloggers!
Today's topic is going to be dedicated to remembering your roots. Remember when you were young, maybe only 9 or 10, and whoever controlled the radio in your family used to use their seniority to play only what THEY wanted to hear?! I remember, and back then, let me tell you I hated it! My mother every single day on the way to school/work for her, would sit in the car during our one and a half hour commute and blast 101.1 WCBS FM New York. The oldies station! Very annoying I might add when I wasn't up to speed in school as to what was the new and popular stuff. Mind you this all came to an end at around 11 years old when I took a stand LOL, but anyway let's not veer off the beaten path. This "annoying" radio hogging that went on made me what I am today. These "oldies" are my roots, and remembering my roots makes me diverse, dynamic, and who I am as an artist. Think about it, which songs do you know better than the ones that you grew up listening to even before you knew what a beat was? I learned to snap to these songs, count 8 to these songs and overall learned the idea of music to THESE SONGS!
I know what you're thinking, PM, why do we care about what we listened to when we were 7? Simple. It is what made you a musician. This music sparked something inside of you to make you want to pursue a career in music. Therefore, we as musicians have an emotional attachment to it and can relate to it better than anything else we know. As a DJ, growing up listening to Frankie Vallie and The Four Season as well as The Temptations taught me what true music was. Musical talent at it's roots, before synthesizers and auto-tune. Learn to count a 16 beat on a Temptations song when the drummer was live and couldn't quite stay perfectly on beat and you can mix anything I promise you that. Learn to mix these songs harmonically into today's music and you are a monster. Plain and simple. I do it every set, and every set I get one person who says, "Bro this music is from the sixties". So, do I get discouraged? NO. Do I not play it. NO. I take that "60's" Temptations song and sample the beat, throw in some Rick Ross and all of a sudden that same guy comes up and says, "Bro, you got a CD, you're stuff is nasty!" Crowd control, you learn it, you're a master of your craft.
So what is the moral of today's story? Be yourself. Being yourself means remembering your roots. It doesn't have to be Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons, but maybe it's Bob Marley, Ritchie Valens, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge. Whoever it is, don't be afraid to represent where you started. Quite frankly, screw what everyone says, screw what they think. If you master your music they'll move to anything you tell them to with your hands. Period. I've tried it, I've succeeded in doing it, and if I didn't, I wouldn't be here writing to you. Not everyone will be your fan, but choose your poison. You can either be a DJ that everyone likes and no one remembers, sort of like most DJ's that just spin anywhere without regard to a following or demographic that they want to appeal to. They do it for the money, the girls all of that commercial stuff. If you are a true DJ, a passionate DJ then you want to be the DJ that maybe not everyone likes, but EVERYONE remembers. You will have your fans. You will have your haters. Haters are just undercover fans believe me BTW. Anyway, the fans you do have will follow you wherever, they will love that YOU play what everyone else is scared to or just isn't talented enough to. You will appeal to people while being you. What can be better? Until next time.....keep rocking!
I learned all I just spoke about from watching one man. Adam Michael Goldstein aka DJ AM.....
