The Producers : Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis

I lived in Minneapolis during "Flyte Time" rise to fame. The songwriter/ producer team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were in The Time and had begun producing some major acts. Their sound became synonymous with the "pow pow bang" beat of the 80's.

The pair met in high school in Minneapolis and formed a band called Flyte Tyme which evolved into The Time. In 1981, they were joined by Morris Day and toured with Prince as his opening act.

As members of The Time they recorded three of the group's four albums (The Time, What Time Is It?, and Pandemonium. The first two albums are said to have shaped early eighties R&B music (featuring "Cool","Get It Up", "The Walk", "777-9311", and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too"). The pair were fired from the tour because a blizzard left them unable to rejoin after a short break to produce The SOS Band. However, one of the tracks they were producing, "Just Be Good to Me", became a big hit and made their reputation, as well that of the SOS Band.

After working with other artists like The SOS Band, Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal, Jam and Lewis were introduced to Janet Jackson and produced her breakthrough album Control in 1986, for which the duo won a Grammy Award. Their collaboration on her next album, 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, was even more successful.

Since then they have produced hits for Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stephani and Boyz II Men to name only a few.

This video set features The S.O.S. Band's "Just Be Good To Me", Human League's "Human", and an instrumental of Usher's "U Remind Me", all Flyte Time productions. I've also included a cool radio interview of a very casual Jam and Lewis on The Amie Jo Show.

Enjoy.

What Music Means To Me

Music..

Wow..Music..Crazy man thats the one constant love of mine that iv had since age 4...i dnt kno maybe when i was a baby i was dancin around maybe kickn n my moms stomach lol..Music is a feeling its a medicine its wats real.

i remember when i was lil my dad always had me singing and we would record video and he would always have me listening to some old skoo jazz or al green and the o' jays lol thats probably why i like oldies so much and man he got me hooked on some anita baker haha..he taught me that listening to all sorts of music would help me with my music because u have the right source the right kinda palet to work on. then my dad sung too see he had one of those smooth idk think of a mixture between barrywhite, blue from the temptations and eddy cane from the 5 heartbeats voices...i loved it.

i accosiate memories with music..seems like at everypoint in my life and every very good or bad memorie had a song to go with it mostly because 1. i was always listening to something and 2. because when i was happy or sad or mad music was my safe place my comfort my joy. so i can listen to mostly any song and think of a time in my past...for example when i listen to the O'jays i think of my dad and going to the bowling alley late at night lol and eats burking and rally's all the time dippn fries in my frosty lol...or lauren hill reminds me of when my brother died..or most rock songs remind me of thoses times in class when me and my friend would just bust out wit some daughtry or something and id start swingin my hair around and most likely we'd all get kicked out of class lol..theres lots.

When i sing i get a release and it makes me feel soo good and free and i dnt kno im so happy..weird but foreal i love listen to my own singing lol on the good days..when i write its mostly about how i feel about something or wats gone on with me or maybe stuff people have told me about..but its all real...realized i can never finish writing a song lol cant concentrate on one song long enuff. But i can sing forever.I love it.

Music can heal any wound..and can change any mood..it can tell the truth...it Can exspress what you cant. Music is Life.

Thats What music Means To Me.

There were many musical firsts in the 80's that seem to revolve around friends of producer Trevor Horn (who shows on the last "cry" in the video). Whether it is Yes and the Art of Noise with the use of sampling, or being the first video on MTV, Trevor and his friends were innovators. In this post we have his friends Godley and Creme (of 10cc) and their video "Cry". It was the first to explore morphing as a visual effect.

Being talented and successful songwriters Godley and Creme were also responsible for producing some of the 80's best music videos, including The Police's "Every Breath You Take", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", "Synchronicity II", Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight", Duran Duran's "Girls On Film" and "A View to a Kill", and George Harrison's "When We Was Fab".

Their experiment in morphing inspired and culminated in Micheal Jackson's masterful "Black and White" . I'd love to have it in the set but the Jackson Mafia has disallowed embedding on all of the video sites. I think Michael takes morphing waaaay too personally anyway.

New Song up!

It's now 6:09 am and I haven't slept a wink. What better time to record my latest attempt at songwriting? Actually it's not my latest - I actually wrote this one back in March, but decided I have nothing better to do than to record it on my brand spanking new Macbook (woot) and get reactions from my lovely Indaba peers.

Caution: this song comes with a story, mainly because I have lots of time to waste before everyone else wakes up and the day really gets started. So if you aren't interested in what inspired this stroke of musical brilliance, you can just scroll down for the lyrics!

The story, however, is short.

So I met this guy at an open mic in a big city near my little town and we pretty much hit it off right away. I hung out with him for a few days, then sadly had to return home since I had classes and crap. But I wrote this song the first day I was away from him - our towns are only an hour apart - the whole thing is pretty pathetic. But it was love at first sight and we are still going strong, four months later. This song is obviously a favorite of his, so here's to you, D, and all your awesomeness.

As far as the song goes, nothing too spectacular. Simple melody, simple lyrics, but I know for a fact that there's worse out there...

YESTERDAY (c) Suzi Barnes 2008

I miss you more than I did yesterday

and I love you more than I did yesterday

I would call you on the telephone

but it's already so damn late

but I miss you more than I did yesterday

Yesterday, it may not seem that far away to you

but it's been miles and hours since I watched you look me through

when I said I had to go and you told me to stay

I miss you more than I did yesterday

I want you to look at me like you did yesterday

I want to hold your hand like I did yesterday

and I keep on looking back

when all I got's today

but I miss you more than I did yesterday

chorus

and it's ok cause I know you feel the same way...

chorus

any feedback would be most welcome.

Interview conducted by Hugo Lunny

MVRemix: For those that are now hearing about you for the first time, tell us about yourself.

Charles Sweeting: I was born in Carol City, raised in Miramar and I’m a county line road representative. I’ve been doing this for a minute, back in 2003; I was in a group (Slick & Dro) that dropped a regionally successful single named, “Sho Nuff “. I’m just out here grinding right now, I feel blessed to be in this situation I’m definitely going to make the most out of it. I also produce the majority of my music as well as songs for a lot of Florida artists; Just trying to get it all in, ya feel me.

MVRemix: How important do you feel networking is?

Charles Sweeting: I’m just trying to build a brand - 4th Qtr Ent. And as you build a brand, a key component is valuable people. So as I grow, continue to meet people, and network, 4th Qtr Ent. will be one of the most successful companies in the entertainment industry.

MVRemix: As a songwriter, who has influenced you?

Charles Sweeting: For the most part Bob Marley and Outkast are my two main influences; then you have Erykah Badu that’s been in my CD player forever. Growing up music was a big part of our household and as a result of that I’m a big fan of old school artists like, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Michael Jackson.

MVRemix: How does living in Florida shape your attitude towards music, art and culture in general?

Charles Sweeting: South Florida’s known as one of the most culturally diverse places in the country. As a result it has helped me to appreciate and at times incorporate different styles and elements into what I do, ya dig.

MVRemix: What was it that made you move to Ohio for work? Was the music project not working at that point?

Charles Sweeting: I was willing to do what ever it took to save up bread to make this music thing happen, and if it meant working in the steel mills with cancerous substances and in twenty-two hundred degrees for seven days a week, then that’s what it is, and that’s what it was. It wasn’t that the music project wasn’t working; it just wasn’t moving how I wanted it to be.

MVRemix: Tell me about the song “She Bout It” - do you have an album in the works?

Charles Sweeting: It has been a blessing;’ She Bout It’ is currently a top 100 song on the rhythmic charts, and growing everyday. We’re shooting the video for it in August, so look out for that.

MVRemix: What is your aim with music? Are you looking for commercial success or artistic depth?

Charles Sweeting: I make music from my heart and for those that matter don’t mind and for those that mind don’t matter.

MVRemix: What separates you from other rappers? Why should I opt to listen to your music above others?

Charles Sweeting: I’m not saying just listen to my music, listen to all of our records and let’s bring hip-hop back!

MVRemix: Have fun with this one, a la “Fight Club” - “If you could fight any celebrity, who would you fight”?

Charles Sweeting: Fred Flintstone.

MVRemix: Would you win?

Charles Sweeting: Yabadabadoo!

MVRemix: What next do we have to look forward to from you?

Charles Sweeting: Charles Sweeting for President, the movement.

MVRemix: Any last words?

Charles Sweeting: Bham!

Original Charles Sweeting Interview

Charles Sweeting

There's a good chance that you've been hearing his new hit, "She Bout It" a few times a day if you've listen to Power 96 lately. His name doesn't initially seem ready-made for stardom but his sound definitely is. And when you think about it, if you're a good enough talent, you shouldn't really need a stage name anyway.

I'm talking about Charles Sweeting, the 23-year-old Carol City native who's been blowing up lately and getting lot's of club and radio spins because of his summer anthem, "She Bout It" which you can click on below.

The dude's been performing all over South Florida lately, popping up on stages at Passions, VooDoo, Cafe Iguana Pines, and the Crazy Horse to name a few. He's sort of in the baby stages of forming a career but so far, I like what I've heard. This weekend, he's playing the Power 96 Beach House party in Miami and his set starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday. There's lot's of national acts who'll be at the event over the weekend but if you want to support a good local act, don't miss his set.

The 2008 Power 96 Beach House party takes place, Friday, July 11th- Sunday, July 13th at the Double Tree Surfcomber Hotel on Miami Beach, 1717 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL. 33139
(305) 532-7715 or visit www.power96.com
