Oppressive heat and humidity here. I recorded this short cloudburst at dusk last night. Tunder, short rain. Nice distant sirens, jetliner, lots of insects.

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, downloadable video, new soundtracks

I recently participated in creating one of two new soundtracks for the
classic horror film _The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari_ with others in the
Chain-Tape Collective, and the result has been released under a Creative
Commons license.

A downloadable DVD-quality version of the silent film with the new
soundtracks is available from archive.org. This version contains both
soundtracks in a single file, and requires either QuickTime Pro or VLC (

Spent last evening playing around with my new Piranha guitarbow that I ordered with the rest of the order flood on this list. Recorded this short spacemusic-ish piece using the Piranha with the Eagle 6-string fretless bass, processed through a Moog MF-105B bass MuRF and a Electro-Harmonix Polyphonic Octave Generator.

D came over this afternoon and we worked on our Ouroboros live-looped tuba project.

Two sets sampled today:

(All names my fault. All tracks recorded live, all source audio live-sampled tuba, no post-processing or layering other than cleaning noise using SoundSoap.)

Didjwalk - 19min43sec. Only non-looping effect used was the Moogerfooger MF-105B Bass MuRF. I like how this came out.

Whales at the Event Horizon - 15min01sec. Moog MF-107 FreqBox and MF-104 analog delay, plus a couple more in spots. There's a couple of volume peaks in the first minute that headphones might not be advisable for.

Sunday afternoon I went back to the Temples and Tombs exhibit at the NC Museum of Art. After spending an hour wandering through ancient Egyptian artifacts and making my way over the excavations outside in the hot and oppressively hazy afternoon, I couldn't stop thinking of north Africa with Bill Burroughs shopping for finds in the Interzone bazaar. This influenced my Sunday afternoon music, with the result of the following:

rain samples to share

We had a nice heavy rainstorm this morning. I recorded three 2-3minute
chunks using a BLUE Snowball USB mic with the lo-gain firmware, WireTap Pro,
and a MacBook Pro. Files are available as both AIFF and MP3 on this page:

I moved the mic different distances from the floor, from resting to just a little off, to higher, so the deck-level impacts differ.

No processing, just fieldwork. Anyone is welcome to use these as you like. (I'd like to know if you do, though.)

Ouroboros example

Sunday afternoon David and I worked on our Ouroboros live looping tuba project (he plays tuba, I liveloop the tuba and process it with effects). We were both interested in what might occur applying my newly acquired Electro-Harmonix Polyphonic Octave Generator to David's tuba. What was already a deep, rich tuba sound morphs into a massive slab of pipe organesque assault by applying the E-H and analog delay to some of the live loops.

Fun show, I enjoyed seeing everyone else's sets.

It's a line out recording from my mixer: ran it through Sound Soap to clean up hiss, no other editing. Quiet spots are because the audio dialogue of the educational films was playing from the projectors and I was leaving space for the films to be heard.
