Join Youssou N'Dour and IntraHealth in an Open Collaboration!

Global non-profit IntraHealth International sees the use of open source technologies in medicine as a revolutionary step towards better health care in Africa and other developing regions. To that end, they have created IntraHealth OPEN. In much the same way that a musical piece benefits from collaboration and a sharing of ideas, IntraHealth believes that open source technologies can create better medical systems that will save lives.

In order to get the idea across and increase awareness of open-source technologies in the developing world, IntraHealth has teamed up with Grammy Award winning musician and philanthropist Youssou N’Dour (see video). Youssou has donated the stems to his song “Wake Up” for the purpose of creating an IntraHealth OPEN Remix album. Some of entertainment's biggest stars have already donated their talent to the cause by submitting remixes – artists such as Toubab Krewe, Nas, Peter Buck of R.E.M., and Duncan Sheik.

IntraHealth and Youssou N’Dour are reaching out to Indaba’s collaborative community of musicians to join the cause. Using the stems to “Wake Up”, re-imagine Youssou N’Dour’s song and join other well-known musicians who have donated time and talent in support of IntraHealth OPEN.

Sing a duet with Youssou, create a new beat, or arrange new instrumentation.
Show the world the power of open technology!

Hey guys!

We here at Indaba wanted to let you know that Heather & Pape's comments were never meant to sway voting or judging in any way. Everyone here was just so impressed with all of your work and they wanted to express it. The point was never to cause conflict or bias any submission in any way. We apologize for any discomfort this may have caused, and we can assure you that the lesson has been learned.

We also can't wait to announce the winners tonight at 9PM EDT, so make sure to check back tonight. Congrats to all of you on such great mixes!

I found this interesting vid about underground hip-hop in Senegal on Youtube. I hope you enjoy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABSgpqtiMoA&...

Paul Chandler wrote on May 25, 2009:

Point well taken MiiM. I think Tassili has put forward a good solution too.

Thomas M. wrote on May 25, 2009:

Some thoughts from me:
1. I don't think it was the intention of Heather and Pape to influence voters towards the songs they commented positively.
I assume, they just were excited about all those excellent submissions in this contest. I think they felt like the rest of us that this contest triggered an enormous amount of creative energy and just wanted to share their impressions.

Even if they left no comments on my entry I did not feel bad about it. I was just happy to see how excited the IntraHealth staff was about this contest.

2. IntraHealth runs this contest and could easily influence the judges to choose their favourite submissions without leaving public comments on some songs. They could just talk to the judges directly. If they had bad intentions, why should they make them public ?

3. I don't see why IntraHealth should be interested to influence the outcome of the "honourable mentions" selection ?

Nevertheless,
4. I feel that it was not a wise idea of IntraHealth officials to leave their comments with their "official" tag, as it opens the door for all kind of doubts and suspicions. So this might be a lesson learned for the next contest.

best regards,
Thomas

Tassili U came up w/ a perfectly elegant solution... If Intrahealth officials wanted 2 comment i believe they shoulda done so anonymously... and i havta believe that they were just caught up in the excitement of watching the competition unfold not meaning 2 cause any influence thru their "endorsements".

Thx 4 Maja and Dell 4 speaking ur thoughts about this as well... i'm pretty sure that more remixers here feel that exact same way however don't upset the final outcome... 4 themselves and each other...

@ Paul... I wouldn't necessarily say ur totally on the "outside" as I did check out the Studio Mali myspace and recognized ur name as CEO...lol
Nice work ur doin w/ that... and offering local i'd imagine impoverished African musicians session work as well as pulling in ppl like Bono and such 2 promote ur cause...

However, I don't really understand what ur thoughts on "self promo" havta do w/ this specific issue... all we r saying really here is once we saw comments coming from Intrahealth it took away the excitement for a few of us.... from the competition... as far as the final outcome... u havta recognize that its not just about musical prowess here... again its another remix contest where the outcome is about spreading a message for a cause4 Intra-health... even tho the judges aren't technically employed by them... i'm pretty positive that they will choose the mix 1) that speaks the message Intrahealth wants 2 promote, and 2) perhaps a submission that is creative and @ a high level of musical execution. (as many r)
and as far as ur point bout David Bither well thats only 1 of the judges...lol
and I'm sure u as a CEO of ur own studio, if u were holding sum sort of contest lookin for the next African Idol... u wouldn't want ur employee's whispering in the contest's ears "hey ur really good, imma tell Paul bout u"... even tho ur not specifically on the judges panel urself.... would u hosting that whole event want 2 potentially ruin the excitement 4 all the contestants involved?
That all we're sayin here... that it might sway things b/c the fact that its about an Intrahealth message... and that it kinda let sum of the air outta this remix comps tires... left sum of us feelin flat...

You all make some interesting points. I do think it was probably a mistake in judgement for high-ranking people at Intra-health to gush over certain mixes and ignore others. I sat this one out but I hope for the sake of everyone that worked so hard on their mixes that Heather and Pape's endorsements do not have an influence on the judges decision making process. I mean, when you think about it, if they just had to make comments they could have done so without talking about their positions at Intra-health don't you think?

Maja Kristjansson wrote on May 25, 2009:

@Miim I totally agree with you. I felt the same, but didn't want to say anything. I thought people might think I was pissed off that Intrahealth didn't leave a comment on my remix:-)
But I felt it was wrong and it took out the excitement for me.
Well MiiM you said it all I can't add more to that.

@Dell I agree there must be a better system. I understand that Indaba needs to spread the word in order to stay a success, and I guess the voting system helps with that. But in my opinion it also diminish the value of the honourable mentions from votes. So a system that both drags in new people and only let Indaba users vote.
Maja

Miim brings up some interesting and I believe valid points. It is a rather touchy subject and I applaud him for speaking his mind. The big surprise to me too is not only did Hal G. not receive comments from them, but that he didn't land in the top five. The topic of the popular vote has been discussed in the forum for a while now, and I don't pretend to have the solution, but it does seem to me that there has to be a better system. Perhaps the vote of those who "live here" should carry more weight than those just "visiting". Please don't get me wrong, I love doing these (for my own growth if nothing else), and I believe things will get better. Especially if people continue to feel free to express themselves in the music and in the blogs.
