Add a counter-melody or record an entirely new version

Yo-Yo Ma will announce the winner Friday, January 16th, on NPR's (National Public Radio) All Thing's Considered. Click here to go to the show's website for local listings and more information.

Preeminent cellist and collaborator Yo-Yo Ma has always explored new ways to share music with his audience and other performers. For his latest album, Songs of Joy & Peace, Yo-Yo invited a remarkable group of friends to create music with him – including such internationally respected artists as James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, Chris Botti, and Renée Fleming.

Now Yo-Yo Ma is extending the invitation to you. In celebration of his album’s upcoming release, Yo-Yo would like to share the joy of collaboration with Indaba’s international community. To get you started, he has recorded the melody of the traditional song, "Dona Nobis Pacem (Give Us Peace)". Collaborate virtually with Yo-Yo by adding your own counter-melody or record an entirely new set of variations.

For inspiration, we've included an example variation from an improvisational session with Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer as well as an example counter-melody recorded by Yo-Yo Ma. Check them out in the Source Files section to the right.

Music has the power to bring us all closer together. Whether you're an electric guitarist or a choral singer, we invite you to bring your creativity to Yo-Yo Ma's musical party. To learn more about Songs of Joy & Peace click here to view a video message from Yo-Yo Ma.

Winners were announced on January 16, 2009 at 4:30 PM EST

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I SPAM the discussion board?!?!
A: No! It's meant for discussion. Posting about your mix is cool, but please be respectful of everyone who wants to talk about the contest and don't post the same thing repeatedly.

Q: I don't see Official Rules for my country in the fine print below, can I still enter the contest?
A: Unfortunately, international laws around contests are complicated and we have to abide by the rules as drafted by our partners in the contest. If you don't see your country listed then, unfortunately, you are not eligible to win the contest. We try to be as inclusive as possible and truly apologize for any frustration this causes.

Q: My widget doesn't work. What the heck?
A: Different sites have different compatibility issues with widgets. We are working with our widget provider to make the widgets compatible with as many sites as possible. The best way to guarantee success is to follow these guidelines:

• Avoid using Internet Explorer (use Firefox instead)
• When posting to popular social networking sites use the built in sharing functionality for that site, don't just copy and paste the embed code.
• Avoid posting to the "About Me" or "Like to Meet" sections of your MySpace profile.

Q: How do I download the source files?
A: Click the "Enter Now" button above and follow the guidelines to download the tracks

Q: What are the song details?
A: Bit Depth:24, Key: F Major, Time Signature: 3/4

Q: How many versions can I submit?
A: One entry per contestant! Make it count!

Q: Are we allowed to post the track to our social networking sites?
A: Once you submit your remix, you'll get your own personalized widget so you can spread your entry all over the web. Just submit it and then click on the "Get Widgets!" button.

Q: Can I submit a mashup and/or use samples in my submission?
A: No! Your submission must be made of the tracks provided and/or material for which you own the copyright.

Q: I don't see my question here!
A: Please post a description of the problem on the discussion board and we’ll help you as best we can!

All, I wanted to let you know that we spoke with Sony yesterday. They suggested extending the timelines on announcing since Yo-Yo had scheduled an interview on NPR's All Things Considered (we've posted the details of the announcement in the copy above). We agreed that it would be a great way to give you all additional exposure. As always, we want to make sure that we give everyone involved as much of a boost as we can. You've been fantastically creative and we love that you're enjoying the collaborations. Here's to making great music that gets heard in many places and inspires many people!

Oh wow! You should have seen my kids this morning asking about the contest winner...they were anxious to find out. Is it too goofy to hope Mr. Ma will give a "shout out" on NPR to my kids who participated in the contest? That would be great. Thank you for all your incredible submissions. This is the kind of learning more music students need- on-line, global collaboration.
