Site Redesign Feedback + Requests

Indaba Music posted on July 8, 2009 at 11:18 PM

We're excited to share the new Indaba with you! We've listened to your feedback and redesigned the collaborative process to reflect how you use the site. There are three key new pages: the community page, the new sessions structure, and your new My Studio.

We'd love to hear your thoughts! Bang around the site, try out all the new features, and share your feedback, requests, and insights.

Happy collaborating!

Having serious issues with the session player. As in... it doesn't play in my FF 3.0.11. When I switch to IE view (in FF), it plays, but I cannot see the waveform at the bottom.

I miss how the information was displayed for the main session page. I find this new display confusing, specifically the fact that the discussion isn't seperate and off to the side. I don't like having to toggle between "views" to see everything with my option being to have "everything" lumped together. It's really inefficient and confusing. I'm worrying about my new session members being utterly confused and frustrated.

The second issue I have is with the "session expires" area. Why does this session expire? I can't seem to find a place in the "manage" section that will help me change this.

I hear from a lot of my friends on Indaba how they loathe the new format and to some extent I agree. Main problem is how much of it doesn't work !
It's BAD to do such a sudden radical redesign,n that users have to start the learning curve over and it discourages use of the site.

Here is what is GOOD: imho
It's GOOD how now the studio page shows the activity in the different sessions without having to visit all or be subjected to the barrage of email of before redesign.
It's GOOD that there are now 3 tiers of involvement, with an affordable entry point.
"Happening Now" is a GOOD idea - even though it was borrowed from Kompoz.
It's GOOD that IndabaMusic exists and you are trying to make it work.

The Really BAD stuff:
It's BAD that the "everything" and "Discussion" is taking up the main space and the actual music is relegated to a tiny portion of the page.
It's BAD to have the console be the first menu item in a session page, when it doesn't work and it will never replace the DAW that serious musicians already have learned and use. Many users view the download and install with valid suspicion.
It's BAD that files ( individual tracks ) and mixes are now lumped together.
When one checks out a session it's very difficult to figure out what is going on.

Still BAD is that beginners can create sessions that are empty. Looking at this mornings "Happening Now" - every entry, sans one, is a default session with no files and with the users having no clue how to get started.

I also feel that the latest mix should be available to all in a public session. One has to join and wait for approval. The creative process doesn't want to wait for that, so the only other choice is to audition to a reference track set by the owner a long time ago and forgotten. When I first started using the site I unwittingly created a different version, but could not join in what was last happening for an audition.
If people want to audition or add tracks where they are not ready to go public without first communicating with the owner. That could be an option, but the default should be public. All tracks!

As to the redesign - we're stuck with it I guess.
At least make the font one size and a bit smaller, so that one can find the music for the clutter. The music should be the default, biggest part when one goes to a session.

no date on discussion posts - not an improvement

Just thought I'd let you know, there's a buffering problem during song playbacks, since the upgrade. I'm using Firefox 3.0.9 on a Vista machine and, again, since the upgrade, the playback catches up with the buffering almost all the time, causing songs to start and stop, during playback. I never had this problem, under the old site design.

Figured you'd want to know about this particular bug, so you can analyze and, hopefully, fix it. It's kind'a tough to get a feel for a song, 4 measures at a time. *g*

We are listening to you guys...Ulf - we've switched the positioning of the Upload a Track so that it is the first menu item. We've also added the recent activity feed to the Session Overview page so that you can get a better sense of what's going on in a session at first glance.

We're definitely listening to all of your suggestions and are hard at work at making the site as intuitive and fun as possible. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Steve,

Can you provide a little more detail as to how the site won't let you invite? What are you doing exactly? And how is the site not responding?

Thanks,
Chris

I think more pathes or links to commonly used options would be helpful. Or just a tool bar on every page that had common needs like request approval would save a lot of guessing for newbes like me.

I just lost about 3 paragraphs I had already written in a message response to a collaborator because I just clicked outside of the message editing pop-up. :(

AJAX is fine and dandy, but if the message editing dialog would have been a traditional HTML form on its own page this wouldn't have happened or at least I could have retrieved what I already had written by using the browser back button!

Please fix this annoying bug! Hint: do not use pop-ups or at least use a confirmation dialog when the pop-up is closed and the message has already been edited.

Hi, just to say "most played artists" does not work in my view... On networks like this "water goes to the sea" or "poor becomes even more poor and rich becomes even more rich". Nothing to say to Sopheary, Natalie, Manyks etc. but... they are visited more and more mainly because they are visible in the homepage...

It's jus about impossible 2 find like (or otherwise) minded souls here, fillin' in da "find people form" don't cut it, cos, er, well people like moi an' my ilk, don't (cos they're limited, don't cover everyt'ing & proffer up all sorts of unsuitable bod's) fill in said forms.

Would it not b easier/simpler 2 list all us Indaba dabba do do's in alphabetical order, as it's also more than likely that a pic might make moi curious about some bod & not wot u deem appropriate in, agin, said forms.

I wanna b able to find other bod's without pointless form filling, jus' put up loadsa pages wiv every bod on 'ere, an' I can search on me own, in me own time, without any help? from daft forms.

Mucho gracias mon amigo's.

Er, if'n u do decide to implement dis, well, on, er, said pages, the search could then b further refined by searching 4, say, singers, guitarists, pro's, whatever, or, er, whatever tickles your fancy, if'n u get moi drift.
