Session Console 2.0 Feedback + Requests

Indaba Music posted on July 9, 2009 at 2:15 AM

We're excited to release an alpha version of Indaba's new Session Console 2.0. We're aware that there are performance and functionality issues but we wanted to let you get your hands on this as soon as possible.

Our development team is actively working on improving the experience and we'd love your feedback and feature requests.

Thanks!

Three observations./questions, so far:

1) Tracks aren't playing from the Session console. The wave/comment section appears at the bottom of the page, but the song/track doesn't actually play.

2) The new Session Console won't run on my machine, even though I have the latest version of Java. So, I run into a wall, trying to work in a Session.

3) How do we check how much space is left on our monthly upload/download quota...or is this no longer metered on individual member but, rather, for Sessions?

I know all to well bugs show up early in an upgrade process. Just figured I'd point out the problems I've encountered, so far.

how does recording work? is there any midi input? or can we only record directly from mics?

Sandy Parakilas posted on July 9, 2009 at 7:35 PM

Tried running this on 2 macs, and I ran into 2 issues:

1) on my G5 running 10.4.11, the console crashes shortly after loading

2) on my MBP running 10.5.7, the console.jnlp file opens in text edit by default, so the console doesn't launch (I have Java installed)

The console will not fully load on G5 Mac running 10.5.7. Nothing really shows up but the login screen and even when I logged in the console screen stayed blank for a long time.

Hi all, wanted to update you on a few known issues:

- The console doesn't currently work in Mac 10.4/Tiger. We didn't want to keep it from everyone else since there are so few members who use Tiger but right now you need 10.5

- We are hearing from a few Mac users that are having problems logging in or with the interface appearing correctly or loading with text edit. These seem to be sporadic and are all Java issues that we are looking into with Sun Microsystems' help and they should be fixed very soon.

We'll keep you updated on other developments. Thanks again for checking out the alpha. We will be making some major performance upgrades over the next several weeks so let us know what other issues you are having so we can make sure they are addressed.

Thanks!

Looking forward to trying the new session console but I too get the console opening in TextEdit on my mac through Firefox and Safari, although in Firefox the download window suggest the file should open with 'Java Web Starter'. I can't find that anywhere though :(

Hope you find a fix soon,

Two issues:

I can't get the console to open at all. I'm using an acer PC with Vista. When I click the "record/mix" button I get a dialogue box telling me windows can't open this file. Also the "view all" buttons don't work.

if you don't get this crappy console fixed I will cancel my membership. It's useless to me if I can't mix other folk's tracks with mine and vice versa. It just goes through fetching, cnverting and building for eons. Part of the reason I had backed off using the site so much was because it was so slow and now it's 10 fold slower

console don't work for me either .... Indaba Console Splash Page shows ... and thats it.

Also ... the whole navigation I find extremely slow. I'd rather have a few features less and therefor simple, fast and easy to find. We're here to make music .... not click around and wait for windows ......

I liked the older setup better

Indaba is trying hard to make the best possible site for its members, this new console was a huge release and there are still some bugs but just be patient. The site itself is already really well set up and they are working really hard to get everything perfect. if you're having questions then post them on the site help forum. This site is a great place to get your music out, so give it up to Indaba for allowing us the opportunity to show the world our music!

Hey guys, I know you're trying to improve indaba but if we can't open the console we're all kinda stuck here.

(i) Could you please prioritise this issue so we can get some work done?
(ii) Can you fix the session preview as well, please?

So I got it to work... however when I record stuff and delete it, it doesn't get removed from the sessions file list. It leaves an empty file so on my first session I have one rhythm file successfully recorded and about 4 lead guitar files with no sound at all cause I deleted them. It's well, annoying! I mean for an alpha it works fine, just wish it was a tad bit more functional with the deleting and what not.

Hi everyone, wanted to update you on a few things and make one request...

First, wanted to thank you guys for the feedback and let you know that this is a top priority right now and we'll have the next version out very soon which will address most of the issues I've seen here. Thanks for your patience and thanks for checking out the alpha version. It's been very helpful for us to get your feedback and I think you'll be very happy with the next version. Please don't stop sending us feedback on the console.

Second, the request! The more specific you can be about what problems you are having and on what platforms (computer, browser, version), would be greatly appreciated. In order for us to fix something we have to be able to reproduce breaking it so anything you can do to instruct us on how to reproduce the problem is really, really helpful.

Thanks again - we're excited to show you the new version!

Hi again, here is a fix to the TEXT EDIT issue. This is a Mac/Java issue but following these instructions should fix it for you!

KNOWN ISSUE: Instructions to fix "I try to open the Session Console and instead a Text Edit file opens!"

For some reasons on a small portion of Mac computers running 10.5 the computer doesn't realize that a required program, Java Web Start, exists. If this is happening to you please follow these instructions and this will be fixed.

1. Use Finder to go to Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices. You don't need to do anything here, just open the window.
2. Next, cllose that window and go to the JNLP file that downloaded when you tried to launch the console, Control+Click on the JNLP file and select 'Get Info'.
3. In 'Get Info' Make sure 'Open With...' is set to 'Java Web Start'.

Finally, double click on the JNLP file and you should be able to launch the console now and in the future. You can now close all windows.

I had the latest Java, but downloaded and reinstalled anyway and now it works.
Try reinstalling java if it won't launch:

1) Having the samples available is great.... but without knowing what BPM they're at or being able to search for BPm isn't a lot of help.

2) I'd like to be able to have a private sound library too. A common library of personal samples available to all my sessions.

3) REX support would be amazing and solve retime issues

4) Tempo track, when was the last time you wrote a song that's the same temp or key all the way through?

Damn fine work by the way. Tested it on Win 7 pre-release with IE8 and Line6 POD XT. A bit laggy but not too bad, quite useable.

Forgot to add... the console doesn't uninstall cleanly. When a session got corrupted and the console didn't want to start I could get round it sometimes by removing the cache .idx file and letting it rebuild. Other times trying to uninstall the application from the add/remove programs removed the icon but left the cache contents, it would then appear to reinstall only not to work.. not very clever.
