@ Indaba
Can we please have some contests with "real" music.
I will attempt to remix anything and usually have a good time doing it but I'm starting to get a little bored with "alternative" type music.
Derek trucks
Erik Truffaz
Rivers Cuomo
Shifty
music instinct
John Legend
Yo Yo Ma
Crystal Meth
Shifty
They are all weird and wonderful "different alternative" types of music.
I just want for once to get my teeth into a really awesome "POP" song.
come on indaba.......POP........means popular!!!!!
all music is technically "real music". the reason indaba usually goes after indie stream musicians and artists is cause they're easier to get. when a mainstream label hosts a remix contest they'll usually host it themselves, and make you PAY to enter the contest.
and we have had a few bands/ artists that are mainstream:
Marcy Playground
Mariah Carey
N.A.S.A (and a lot of the featured artists on Spirit of Apollo)
Third Eye Blind
K-os
and we'll probably have more.
you want to remix mainstream-pop music, but the record labels for that are really annoying
Ex: Britney Spears' label had a remix contest for "Circus" and they didn't even supply stems. and they made you pay to submit.
Mainstream-pop labels try to get as much money as they can without giving much away, so the likely-hood of getting Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lavato, or any other mainstream pop musician on indaba is highly unlikely.
but it's possible, i mean we did have Mariah Carey.
Jakes on point on this one... I think Indaba over the last several months has given a wide range of styles (I wish I had joined for the Shifty or Marian/John Legend contests) to work with and no doubt will give us more. I mentioned on one of the contests a few artists I love to remix would be Eminem, The Beatles (never ever ever gonna happen), Black Eye Peas, All American Rejects, Rolling Stones (also never ever gonna happen) but agree with Treblemaka and Jake that labels and artists make it difficult or there is soo much legal junk its not even worth it. TB sent me a link to BEP remix contest and they were charging along with a Fort Minor remix which I refuse to pay for stems. While I also dont get into some of the contests as much (i.e some of the dance or electronic type of remixes) I try to remix it to a genre, if possible, I do like or just wait for the next one since more than likely something will come soon that will get the juices flowing.
Lady Gaga had a remix comp recently, but I would have needed a translator to enter so I passed. http://www.einslive.de/musik/mix_lady_gaga/mix_lady_gaga.jsp
Maybe once I get back to New York, ma home town I'll get what ya sayin. I need more internet access. Once I get home I'll be in these music remix contests to add some compatition. Peace
Oh.. By the way if ya heard of Samoa ya should check it out. It nice out here.
I would like "Flight of the Conchords". That would be a fun contest.
My favorite would be Sting/The Police or U2, but I suppose that would be tough to get. Any metal band would be awesome, too.
What about a mashup contest with multiple bands?
or a cover song contest? That would be fun for singers.
I don't think it is very interesting to start with electronic dance music like Lady Gaga, Madonna, etc. It is hard to tell the difference between the original and new versions and probably not as much of a challenge IMHO.

Cherie O.
