The emotions felt through a piece of music can have a profound impact on ones life, this can be taken to a new level when film in added into the equation. Film scores have made simple movies into master pieces, even on their own a film score can create amazing imagery. This group is designed to allow composers of all kinds to come together express their opinions on scores for films, ask questions about film scoring, and also present their music.

I had the awesome experience of being able to take a music for film course at my school, SUNY Oneonta, this course allowed me the opportunity to work on various scores to different film clips. I fell in love with the creation of music for film. When I first started writing music for film I put too much music into the scene, so my teacher told me to go sentence by sentence in the scene and find where music should be placed, he said that when there is dialog the the music shouldn't be as strong. The audience shouldn't have to strain to listen to either the music or the dialog. However when the story is unclear to the audience or something is happening off screen the music should tell the story with a melody.

The Idea behind film scoring:
Music in a motion picture is a way to explain the moods of a scene, it tells the audience the way they should feel. Its not always the music which is important but the mood that the music creates. However in the same sense the music shouldn't over power the scene, there is still a movie going on, so sometimes less is more. A single note can portray more emotion then twenty pages of music. So when scoring look at the scene, what emotion is trying to be portrayed through the picture and then create the music to create even more emotion.

It's actually a cello played with among other things, a razor blade.
You know... I believe Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard used a fair amount of synths in The Dark Knight. Mostly for the Joker I think. It gave it a dirty/nasty feel. Try checking that soundtrack out. I actually just made a track called "Bullet Holes" that has a heavy electronic feel to it. Also made as a demo for a soundtrack.

Hey Couch Cow, yeah, you're absolutely right. Razor blades among other things as well. So crazy, huh?
