Beginner Band Mistakes

Thursday March 06, 2008 at 07:00 PM

We've all been in at least one crap band.  Well, maybe not all of us, but I'm willing to bet most of us have played with musicians who - how shall I say this gently? - sucked.  It's common and nothing to be ashamed of. But what can we learn from it? So, so much.  In an ongoing series we're going to discuss some common first-time band mistakes and, better yet, we're going to have fun doing it.  Best of all, I want your insight!  If you think you can add to this series, please email me at Streeter@IndabaMusic.com or post your own on Indaba.

Beginner Band Mistake #1: Planning out everything, except the music.

I can't even begin to tell you how many bands of mine have crumbled because we excessively planned everything but the music.  We would obsess over tour schedules, posters, what to call our CDs and who would give band interviews when we could barely make it through one song.  Often, I would have concocted such a precise vision of our musical future that when things fell short - and they always fell short - it would lead to a downward spiral and eventual band break up.  Only when I met musicians who were more interested in playing music than in what to call their fan club when it formed did I have any measure of success in the field (and that, mind you, was very minimal).

Anyway, to anyone forming a band out there let me stress the importance of being able to play your own songs over the color of the t-shirts on sale during your first tour.

Hahahahaaaaa, that s cool. And bekieve me this is very often so.Not one song ready but future planes and so things and talking talking but never playing.

Ok i have here one story about one of my first bands. This time i remember very often why it was so complete crazy.
I have play guitar, hard rock music was my thing.
The Keyboard player liked the most Pop music and new wave.
Now comes the best................................
The vocalist a woman........no a girl was a fan of musicals.
The drummer played and played all the time smilling but only two rythms.
So and the question was what will we do.Hahaahaaa,a mix between all.But on all our meetings it was the same.I had my big and loud amp and have play my hard rock guitar, the drummer smiled all the time and plays his two rythms, the keyboarder was not loud enough and so i know not excactly but he had play some chords too and the vocalist had also not that big amp and speakers but sometimes i have hear something,
but don t ask me what :-)
After playing we had then all the time a discuse what we want do.And i will never forget the vocalist say:I want something as a song so like it was written from ANDREW LOYD WEBBER musicals.Self today after 25-26 years i roll down the floor by laughing.

This had not llong work so.The drummer and me w have play, wrong, out of time and out of tune for some month but the other two..........no chance..........not loud enough......................but there big planes and all that i want never forget.Andrew loyd webber music makes me still smile :-)

Can someone show me please how i can tune my guitar right ? OH after this i must write a musical............something like cats............oooh and why is the name of my first string E why not Peter or Paul.............heeeeee notation...........what is this...........i need no notation .........i have a distortion pedal........................

OH a Little P.S.........
After all this time i have learn now why the strings have this names..........i am not silly
E-stands for ERNEST
A-stands for ALBERT
G-stands for GUIDO
B/H- stands for BERT -HELMUT........a double name why the name givers come from diferent parts of the world and so in one part they say BERT and in another Part HELMUT.Complicated :-)
E-The last string this is the little EVE

So you see when people want learn they can learn self when it is not easy at the beginn. After some time everybody gets real good and an EXPERT !

I have been in da biz for awhile now and can tell you that beginner band mistake is a direct hit on truth. However, very, very, close to mistake #1 is #1a. No matter how good homies, buds, peeps, hangers, etc.. ya'll think you are - somebody has to be in charge. If you try to do everything by popular vote or "group" decision, you'll go nowhere and won't be able to figure out how you got there so d** fast!!!!!!!!!
Just like sports, blah, blah, blah no matter how big a star the quarterback or pointguard is, you gotta do what the coach decides is best for the team.
