Emo music and culture has been en vogue in the US for quite some time now. I didn't realize the popular 'I'm crazy sad right now' movement had moved to Mexico as well. But it has and while most people in the US are at least tolerant of the spiky-haired, black-clad kids, Mexicans seem to dislike them quite a bit. They dislike them so much that for the better part of two weeks Mexican emos have been the subject of public attacks. The attacks are so bad that the government needed to have meetings about it. Here's a video of the violence.
I feel kind of bad making light of this but it's just so ridiculous. I can't find a distinct reason why people are attacking the emos other than 'we don't like their attitude.' It's also funny to see people rail against the way emo kids dress while they're wearing Hawaiian shirts and jean shorts. What really seals the deal in terms of how stupid this is is thinking about the attackers trying to explain their actions to their kids some day.
"You see son, back in 2008 there were these people who wore black and called themselves 'emos.' They were into emotional music and kind of bummed me out. So father and his friends had to beat them in public. Don't you understand? It meant something to us!"
Anyway, The Daily Swarm has more in depth coverage of the Emo Riots of 2008 if you're interested. If not, have a great weekend and, to any Mexican emos reading, stay indoors (which is kind of your thing anyway).

im not EMO but i do have to say that the description of the video is incorrect. The EMO's are not being being attacked by just any person. the story was about PUNK verses EMO's. if you know spanish one of the anti EMO kids is asked by the reporter "why do you dislike EMO's" the kid responeded "they are immitating our punk style and we dont like it" . please revise the discreption because of hispanic deseant, it shows that Emo's are hated in Mexico which is not the case. so the story is focused of how the new EMO culture is gaining popularuty and critisicim from the punk community in mexico.

In this video, yes, the punk kids don't like the emo kids, but if you read more about it it's definitely not just punks beating on them. Watch some of the other footage, it appears to be all sorts of people coming together to hate on emos. Obviously, it's not all Mexicans but it appears to be a healthy cross section of the population, at least in terms of dress.
