Neil Young has been bestowed with an honor of almost un-rivaled magnitude. It is an honor no normal man can hope to achieve.
It is an honor reserved for the few, the proud, the strange people scientists admire. Neil Young now has a spider named after him.
That's right, the Canadian folk-rocker so impressed scientist Jason Bond that when he discovered a new species of trapdoor spider, he bestowed upon it the perplexing title, Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi. From the article:
Bond discovered the new spider species in Jefferson County, Alabama, in 2007. He said spiders in the trapdoor genus, who tend to live in burrows and build trap doors to seal off their living quarters, are distinguished from one species to the next on the basis of differences in genitalia.
So there you have it. It's certainly been a wild ride for Neil, hasn't it? First, a rise to fame during the turbulent 1960's. Next, his position as sage philosopher of the acid generation. Finally, his own spider. It doesn't get much more wild than that.
