You're so talented!"

My Favorite Videos, Part II

Friday May 16, 2008 at 10:00 AM

Welcome back.  Last week I posted two videos from one of my favorite bands of all time, Weezer.  Now, say what you will about Weezer's musical prowess, but they certainly know how to crank out a good pop tune.  And this week's band was no different. They're the immature, potty-mouth faux-punk heroes of the late-90's, Blink 182.  Their music (besides drum parts) is simple to the point that most kids I know learned one of their songs on guitar or bass first.  The simple three or four-chord songs won't be making any appearances in musical theory books and much of the lyrical content concerned itself with crushes, annoying parents, aliens and partying.  In short: not Earth-changing stuff by any means.  However, Blink 182 knew how to write a catchy pop punk song, the likes of which hadn't been heard since Green Day's, "Dookie."  year after year, Blink 182 cranked out hit after hit and, to the delight of their fans, paired their fun, poppy songs with fun, poppy videos.  What I think their videos (and music) show is something that is sadly missing in most mainstream rock today: Fun.  They were having fun playing it, they were having fun making the videos and we were having fun watching them.  Only when you see a band mock their peers as mercilessly as Blink 182 did can you see how much of what constitutes mainstream music - the image, the videos, the lyrics - is pure bullshit.

And with that, enjoy three hysterical videos, courtesy of the late, great Blink 182.

All The Small Things:  Their magnum opus, this video effectivley discredits the entire boyband movement with simple mockery.  Pure genius.

What's My Age Again: Some mroe naked running from the boys.  In fact, that's all this video is, isn't it.  In an age when the Backstreet Boys were spending millions to be CGI'ed into spacesuits, Blink 182 made a more compelling video with - literally - nothing.

The Rock Show: Perhaps my favorite music videos of all time.  The boys take the money given to them by a production company spend it in ways they see fit.  Most of those ways involve breaking things, too.  In the end, everyone has a good time and they even make a video.  How fun.

I like these vids too. They actually made streaking vogue again. And I agree the mainstream music industry needs some full frontal nudity in their face from time to time to set them straight. All puns intended!
