SNL's Funniest Musical Moments II

Saturday May 31, 2008 at 09:00 AM

You guys seemed to like my post last weekend showing you some of my favorite musical moments on Saturday Night Live.  Not being one to let a good thing die - and also not being one to leave anything out - I've decided to do a second edition.  Enjoy a few more of my favorite SNL musical moments.

Paul Simon's Turkey Suit Monologue - Back before SNL had a defined pace and pattern, Paul Simon came on to host the show.  The show consisted mostly of Simon singing songs in various locations in the studio with the occasional sketch thrown in (read: the exact opposite of what it is today).  Therefore, the episode is less about laughing than it is about enjoying some good music.  However, Paul Simon manages to pull off one of the funniest monologues in the shows history when he explains some creative differences he's having with the opening premise. (watch the lead-up, too)

Barry Gibb talk show
- Jimmy Falon is one of SNL's most polarizing cast members.  People either loved the often-laughing, almost-always-smirking heartthrob much for the same reasons other people despised him.  Either way, nobody can deny the absurd and hysterical sketch that came when he teamed up with guest host Justin Timberlake to imagine what it would be like is Barry Gibb had a talk show.

Marty Culp and Bobbi Moughan-Culp - After a brief lull in the post-Farley, post-Sandler era, SNL came back stronger than ever with an extremely talented cast including the two actors in this series of sketches: Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer.  Assuming the role of Marty Culp and Bobbi Moughan-Culp, middle school music teachers, the pair crushed sketches week after week with their terrible (yet pitch perfect) performances of the country's biggest hits.  I regret to inform you, however, that SNL appears to be keeping these clips to themselves for now.  I couldn't find a single one online.

Natalie Portman Rap - Natalie Portman is known far and wide for being a loving, charming, kind young woman.  Of course, SNL would want to make light of that.  This rap was overshadowed by the earlier Narnia rap and didn't get it's due, which is a shame because I find it equally funny.  Enjoy the harder side of Natalie Portman.

Operaman - Adam Sandler was the master of the premise-based character.  Often his characters were nothing more than a premise.  If he had created a character called 'guy who touches his nose' and it became insanely popular, nobody would have been surprised.  Operaman, however, seems different.  It wasn't just a silly character without any substance; it was a silly character who happened to sing about the news.  And sing he did.
