Mariah Remix Discussion

Thursday August 28, 2008 at 09:00 AM

I've noticed something on here lately.  No matter what I post, no matter I'm talking about, you guys just seem to want to chat about the Mariah remix contest .  At first I was insulted; "Why aren't they praising my witty, insightful analysis of the 'Gilligan's Island' theme song? The fools!"  But now I've checked my ego and see that the reason you guys are talking about the Mariah remix contest is because it's the best thing to talk about.  So I'm not going to fight the trend with this post.  No, I'm going to encourage it! (Of course, you can talk about it on the Contest Page as well).

So, lay it on me.  Leave comments about your favorite remixes, ones you find interesting, your own process with the song.  Say whatever you want, I want to hear it.

I'll start with this: everyone remixing this track is far more musically talented than I will ever be and, therefore, I have no right to actually comment on the quality of any of the mixes.

Oh, and if you haven't entered yet, you had better hurry up because the submission period ends TONIGHT AT 11:59!

Aww Streeter, I was hoping you'd put up a mix of your own :-(

I'll go with one of the questions you asked, about my process with the song. I worked on this with a great keyboard player friend of mine, up until we recorded he didn't hear the song yet. I wanted to get as far away from the original backing track, especially the piano, Because to me it sounds like the theme to hill street blues, played over and over and over again. Which really brings up the point, Mariah can sing over a kazoo band and still "make" the song. Anyway, I just played the vocals over the monitors and let him tool around, and he layed down some great keys that touches C# maybe once or twice, but still works with her vocal, the key is relative, but not the same. After the session I worked with some drum loops, 4 tracks, 2 which have left and right elements, and layed down a bass track using my fender precision, and like everyone else just kept tweaking this and that, working with left and right fades with her vocals. I know like you can get plugins that do this easier, but i just split the stereo tracks to mono, faded the left and right into each other, and put them back together again. I'd like to hear how you guys put things together because this contest helped connect with some other excellent musicians, and we can all learn from each other.

and here it is!

Sorry I' double dipping here, but I just read back on what I said and I'm not sure if you got the point of the vocal fades, or if it came across the way I was hoping. The facti s is that Mariah is singing to you, she's in love, she's close to you, she's singing in your left, moving to the right, and back again, just as if you were close together, the vocal fades weren't meant to be random, it had meaning, just like every note or rest I put into this track.

I must say, I have been impressed by the remix entries that I've heard so far. After a bit of a last-minute overhaul, I have just put my mix up now. Please feel free to check it out and let me know what you think. I'm open to criticism, even though it's too late now for me to do anything about it.

Good job everyone and may the best remix win!

A few have impressed me, you can obviously tell who knows what they're doing, the quality of the tracks show that. But a lot of the remix I've heard were off key, off beat, and to be honest, complete messes lol. I just hope none of those make it to the Top 10 so the final decision will be a nail biter.

But my process was my usual remix process, start with the drums, lay down some chords trying to do something a little different than the original but still keep it with the a similar vibe, then I go from there adding different sounds. In my remix there are about 15 drum tracks and 17 different sounds/melody's I played.
