Senate Passes Bill That Could Help Save Internet Radio - Oct 1st
The Senate passed the Webcasters Settlement Act (see our podcast with Pandora founder Tim Westergren) which will allow internet radio services and Sound Exchange to negotiate new royalty agreements retroactive to 2006. This is a big win for online radio sites such as Pandora, but they have a long way to go - they still need to actually negotiate the new rates.
Apple Scoffs at Music Publishers' Plan for Higher Royalties - Sept. 30
The National Music Publishers’ Association plans to increase royalty rates Thursday on tracks purchased through online music stores like iTunes from 9 cents to 15 cents per track. iTunes is adamantly opposed to a rate hike and has previously threated to shut down its store rather than absorb higher royalty costs.
eMusic CEO Leaves for Position at Venture Capital Firm - Sept. 29
After a five year tenure as CEO, a relativley long time for the head of an online music store, David Pakman and eMusic are parting ways. Pakman is leaving to become at an unspecified partner at a venture capital fund, but will be invovled in the selection of his successor.

Bruce Springsteen and The E. Street Band have booked the highest-profile gig in music, the infamous half-time performance of the Super Bowl - this year on February 1st 2009.
We7 Signs The Orchard - Sept. 30
We 7, the online music service backed in part by Peter Gabriel has inked a deal with digital distibuter The Orchard, gaining access to more than 14,000 artists and over 1.3 million tracks from independent artists.
