Could It Be...Green Day?

Thursday December 13, 2007 at 07:00 PM

Rumor has it that the threesome comprising Green Day - Billy Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt - have embarked on a new side project, recording under the name "Foxboro Hot Tubs."  After listening to the six songs made available on their website, I can say that the vocals do sound remarkably familiar but the style is very diverse.  Where Green Day normally sticks to straight pop-punk, the Foxboro Hot Tubs seem to favor sixties-style pop (that's a gross generalization, by the way).

If I were a music critic with no sense of humor I would say it is a massive letdown after their masterful, "American Idiot," but lucky for you, I'm a regular guy.  And as a regular guy, I have this fun-loving, six-track album two thumbs up.  Go enjoy it and let it remind you that just because you're the world's biggest, most outspokenly political punk band, doesn't mean you can't have fun from time to time.  I wish more bands were this comfortable with straying from their normal style.  Imagine some of the wonderful music that would produce.

Come to think of it, which bands would you like to see try their hand at a new style?  Let loose in the comments.
