We Have A Winner!

Friday November 21, 2008 at 08:00 AM

No, it's not your Roots remix.  It's Indaban, Philip Magnotti, who won - wait for it - another Grammy.  Magnotti recieved a Grammy for an album he mixed and mastered and took it home in the "Best Latin Jazz Performance" category.  From all of us at Inbada, congrats, Philip!

Check out Philip's Indaba Profile and his recording technology site.  Do it!  He's a two-time Grammy winner!

Oh yes, oh yes, it's time to see what the Indaba world is up to!  Here goes...
Psst. Up to something? Email me at Streeter@Indabamusic.com and let me know.

Indaba bud, Gary Lucas (remember him?), is doing a show in NYC tomorrow with his band Gods and Monsters for any Gotham-based Indabans with a free Saturday night.

GARY LUCAS & GODS AND MONSTERS
Bowery Poetry Club NYC
Saturday, December 1st
308 Bowery (corner of Bleecker)
10pm
$15

Congrats to Indaba, Mark Rapp, who got a nice feature on JazzReview.com

Finally, Indaba Bigwig, Mantis Evar, is holding Online Auditions for a possible rock band.  But how could he audition people online?  I wonder...

In his own words,

I’m considering putting a band together to jam two or three times a months. I’m thinking drummer, guitar, keys, bass (me) and a vocalist or two. If you think you might have the time visit this session (http://www.indabamusic.com/sessions/mantis/5550) and add a quick audition so I can get a quick idea of where your at. The music will be according to the style of the players gathered. I would like to get a few songs established and be open to letting other musicians sit in. We could eventually get a monthly gig somewhere downtown. I have a space for rehearsal. I have a nice kit here also (no cymbals). Let me know if your interested – maybe we could just jam.

Gary Lucas' Upcoming CD/DVD

Thursday November 29, 2007 at 11:00 AM

From Mantis' Blog

Keep an ear out for a record that producer Jerry Roche and I are currently working on.

Ex-Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas and his band Gods And Monsters which includes Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) on keys, drummer Billy Ficca (Television), bassist Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers) along with a horn section had played a great set of music at the CMJ Festival and we have captured it! For your ears AND eyes! The CD will be titled One Man's Meat.

Jerry has decided to release this as a CD/DVD package! The CD includes 14 high-energy tunes that took the audience to their feet! Indaba videographer Chuck Fishbein had collected his crew and filmed the entire event including the private pre-show solo performance and interview at the Indaba loft! The live concert was recorded by Indaba member Liberty Ellman at the Bowery Poetry Club in NYC.

Gary Lucas was co-writer on the Jeff Buckley hit Grace and can be most recently heard on Chris Cornell’s latest album.

Here is a sneak preview of that night. Don’t tell Jerry I showed you!

Hey fellow Indabians, here is what some of your fellow users are up to.

Pssst, if you've done something worth a mention here, please shoot me an email at Streeter@IndabaMusic.com.

Indaba's own Adam Nussbaum and Oz Noy sent word that their European tour was splendid.  Also, Adam will be playing in NYC from November 15-18 with the John Abercrombie Organ Trio. (Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th St.)

Indaba member Richard Johnson's new album, "Who Knew Charlie Shoe" is getting some good press.

My fellow Brooklynite, JD Allen, will be playing in New York with his aptly-named JD Allen Jazz Trio at Cachaca (35 West 8th Street) on November 1st.

Your own Dan Zaccagnino and Mantis Evar have been announced as panelists at the annual conference held by the International Association for Jazz Education. They are now certifiable experts!

Finally, Carol Lester has started work on a terrifying little ditty called "I Want to Have George Bush's Baby."  Yikes.
