- How I Work:
OBJECTIVES: Locally I seek work as a guitarist, or in any of the skillsets listed in "Craft." Locally and online I am looking for collaborators in a creative blend of my guitar blues and whatever you do best. Think Stevie Ray Vaughan on "China Girl" or Santana on Weather Report's "This Is This"--guitar blues outside of the blues context. For my ideal musical settings, go to http://www.polskastacja.pl/ and listen to "Klasyka Muzyki Elektronicznej" (Classic Electronic Music). I wanna play over THAT!
I would like: To play live, for hire, at least two dates a week, with an existing forward-looking group, or to form a group for that purpose, with work for hire a short-term priority. To play blues-informed electric lead guitar (ideally) or other instruments and sing in an original setting, or do highly distinctive covers. To have a hand in bringing a fully-produced sound to recordings and the live setting. To compose or collaborate on new compositions.
My goal is to produce sound appropriate to the musical setting and make money while doing so. Some players have better chops, but few play as tasty. My leads are more about expression and emotion than flash. I am a first-rate rhythm guitarist and bring many other musical skills to the table. I can play within a structured backing or completely improvisationally. I am willing to play with sequences (DJs and techno types, are you listening?) in order to achieve things not possible in realtime.
Let's create something unique and marketable!
- Experience:
EDUCATION: Fricke School of Music, New Orleans,1976-77, concentrating in theory and piano. I read for voice and bass, and chord charts for guitar.
GUITAR: Over 40 years' experience. I don't know "all the chords", but the ones I do I know in every key. I began as an acoustic singer/guitarist and have a highly developed fingerstyle technique, including open tunings and slide. I have played electric rhythm guitar for most of that time as well, but recently experienced a breakthrough in lead playing. My current electric playing has been compared to Jeff Beck, Roger Gilmour, Keith Richards and Robert Fripp. I also produce ambient washes or ostinati in good post rock form. I own and play electric and acoustic guitars, but primarily use my Ibanez as a controller for the Roland VG-88, which essentially emulates any guitar through any amp or effects. It can create brass-, organ- and synthlike sounds as well.
BASS: I am an advanced intermediate player. I have classical training and read for the instrument, but do not have modern music store technique ("typewriter bass", e.g.,). I'm a better jazz player than a rocker. I own both fretted and fretless 4-string electric basses.
KEYBOARDS: I play rhythmic piano or organ, but primarily ambient or melodic synth stuff. I have better training on keys than other instruments, but much less time playing. I use a synth as a sound effects device as much as a musical instrument. VOICE: I sing in a tenor voice in a medium-high range. My voice is better suited to ballads than rock screaming (my guitar is my voice for that!) and mid-high harmonies. I sing well while playing guitar. Singing while playing keyboards depends on the material.
OTHER: Harmonica and Melodica.COMPOSITION: I consider myself a composer first; improvisation is just composition in realtime. know how to put together a pop-friendly piece, but like to add unusual harmonies and progressions. (They may not seem unusual until you try to play them.) I composed and performed contemporary Christian rock music from the early 1980s through the mid 90s. My work is now primarily secular. I have several electronic works in progress.
WRITING: I can write good lyrics, but it's like pulling teeth. I'd like to try co-writing with the right person or group. I write superb copy suitable for websites and promo material.
ARRANGING: I have a background in large choirs and can provide lovely or forceful vocal arrangements.
SOUND & RECORDING: I have been recording on location and in small studios since 1980 and engineering live sound since 1975 on systems up to 4,000 watts and venues of up to 2,000. I have even played an instrument and cued sound effects while operating the board. I continue to contract as a sound engineer on occasion. .
