Yeah VDJ not the best for producing. I use that sometimes, but only to find BPM, and sometimes to re organise tempo, and make cuts. A good, and easy to come by program is FL studio 7. Cheapest of all programs, and really easy to put songs together on it. I use vanguard refx to make all the instruments that I use. Sometimes I use sounds from around the house for my beats, and stuff. IDK man I guess u just have to be creative, and use a base program for VSTI Plugins. My favorite is FL, but if you have the money. I would suggest Reason 3; 4 from propellor head, or pro tools. Even tractror or Acid Pro will do, but I cant help u with operations on them only FL. i Think theres a mixing program on indaba u can use!
