Johnson was raised in America's deep South, in a small Arkansas town in the Mississippi Delta. He began playing guitar at age 9, briefly taking lessons from a hard drinking oil field worker before deciding he could learn more on his own. Johnson recalls that his "real jumping off point" was a cassette he received as a teenager, which featured John McLaughlin Mahavishnu Orchestra Inner Mounting Flame on one side, and Leo Kottke's Greenhouse on the other. Says Johnson "I thought it was one person playing this stuff!"

hey mikey...thanks for the kind words. i am finishing up a new cd now with greg bendian the amazing percussionist with the mahavishnu project. i will be in character as charlie shoe and greg is a guy named junkfish...i am playing old odd guitars i got off of ebay and greg is playing found objects like lard cans and pots and pans etc. the cd will be released by cuneiform records in sept. it is a more rootsy vibe with alot of slide guitar. i will post a track soon. best, rlj
