Purpose Behind Grinding Deviance
Think back to your adolescent years. Did you ever fantasize about being a ’rock star’ ? If you’re in the same boat as me, there were a couple of problems with that dream, namely: Lack of money and lack of talent.
The money challenge can be (more or less.....) circumvented by the use of free services such as MySpace, VampireFreaks and literally dozens (if not hundreds) of other Internet resources. Still, talent was something I could neither acquire nor fake when it came to the music business.
It was then that the idea hit me: What is it that most people REALLY want to accomplish by joining a rock band (aside from the obvious goal of scoring with hot chicks....) ? Do most aspiring rockers truly want to practice guitar chords, bass lines or drum rhythms for hours on end ? How about spending days or even weeks in wallet-emptying studios putting the whole cd together piece by piece ?
Don’t most of us fantasize about the aspects of rock and roll that DON’T require talent ? Antics such as smashing/burning instruments and bellowing primal screams until your lungs hurt would, I think, be at the top of most would be performer’s lists. Who needs talent when it comes to that side of the business ? That, my friends, is where Grinding Deviance comes in. No talent, boring practice sessions or tedious studio time. No saving up thousands of dollars to get a professional cd released. No haggling with record companies for a deal that will most likely leave you with the short end of the stick. No begging and pleading with the owner of every dive in town for a gig. Just pure, pointless, destructive, outrageous, non-pretentitous fun.
