Here's a link to an interview I did recently for allabout jazz that explains it better than I can: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=31750
And...here's a link to an incredible video that a brilliant fellow named Steve McQuillen put together for the Sursiks' song "Little Paper Airplanes": (warning: strong language)

I've been writing and recording music since around 1980. During that time I have never ceased trying to do things which have not yet been done. For the past few years, I've focused on the transformation of speech into music. I use no special software to do this, just my ears.
My main instruments are drums, percussion (especially marimba), piano (keyboards), guitar and bass...I'm also an OK theramin player. I can WRITE parts for any instrument or combination of instruments, however. I know quite a few great jazz/orchestral musicians in the Detroit area who regularily come over and record.
I've written for just about any ensemble you can imagine...(rock, funk, reggae/ska, blues, marching band, concert band, country, electronic, experimental, symphony orchestra, string quartet, woodwind quintet, big band, gamelan ensemble...to name a few) ,composed, arranged & recorded music for video games, educational software, commercials, short films, art shows and various other things.
I've released many independent recordings (since 2004) under the names: The Sursiks, Oven Mitt Johnson, The 180 Gs and Zermos. I was the guitarist and principal songwriter for the Detroit ska band "Gangster Fun" (1986-2000). I'm always up for paying work or interesting projects to work on!
- Band or Group:
- The Sursiks, Gangster Fun, The 180 Gs, Oven Mitt Johnson, Zermos, Crabid Music
- Favorite Lyric:
Oh shiny Maureen
Won't you tell me where you've been
And I'll work out where you should be now.In a cluster of apes
That do rub themselves with grapes
You'll be tied to the back of a cow.-Robyn Hitchcock: "The Bones in the Ground"
- Day Job:
- Piano Teacher/Church Organist
- Website:

- How I Work:
I have a moderately ok studio at home. I play everything except woodwinds/brass. I write out parts for some outstanding musician friends of mine and have them come in and play. I also have 2 day jobs and 3 children under the age of 10...so...I work whenever I can. If it's a paying job, I always manage to get it done right and before the deadline.
- Experience:
Masters Degree in music composition, 11 years (at 1 place) teaching piano. 9 years experience as a church music director/organist. Guitarist/songwriter for the Detroit Ska band "Gangster Fun" 1987-2000.
I've written/arranged/recorded music for a couple of Wii games, many educational software games for PCI Educational Publishing, created music for a few corperate videos (including Microsoft) and commercials, and a lot of other freelance work.
- Equipment:
Logic (vintage 2001) which runs on Mac OS9.2 (yes, still). Drums, Guitar, Bass, a Hammond Organ, a few other more modern appliances and a lot of random junk which sounds good when it's hit/blown through. I also have 1 condenser mic and a couple of SM58s.

Hey David. I meant to get some feedback from you before I submitted but I never got around to it. I'd still like to hear your thoughts. I was hoping you would enter, but then again that may have discouraged me from entering. Ha! http://tinyurl.com/yf9tq9b
Mr Minnick! Loved the Colbert mix. Had me laughing all the way.
Anyway, am trying my hand at a cpl of mixes...any chance you could comment on my mixdowns? Any ideas welcome

Thanks if you can, understand if you can't
I think I invited you to my latest session too...
PS. Complete sentences plays like a documentary/science paper. Nice!
David you should collab with this dude. LOL!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phsY7Hj2A4M
Hey Dave so I was wondering if you know how this works since you've won some contests before. I haven't been contacted by anyone yet for my address or anything, do they take a while to get to you?
Hey congrats on the contest. Honestly I was very surprised myself that you didn't get 1st but glad to hear that your happy with the keyboard. Oddly enough I looked up the value of the prizes and the keyboard sells for more than the guitar. Go figure, but I have a feeling it was a close call between you and me and that's why the results were delayed. Perhaps in the end it was jut a flip of a coin? Anyway good luck with your future projects.
thanks david. yeah, that keyboard looks pretty neato. ebay the guitar? ;)
im not in any other contests yet. there are so many right now so there are a lot to choose from. at the moment i have been working on new "ninja" ideas for the band, but plan on jumping onto another contest sometime after. are you doing any others at this time?
hi david! congratulations! (pssst, yours shoulda been 1st!) i was gonna snag that new sursicks album pretty soon. looking forward to it!
bye!
congrats!!! on your my brain remix you are a huge influence for me and look forward to working with you in the future
Wow! David your music is fantastic, I love 'Ignition' when I was younger I use to make beats on water, who am I kidding I still do it today.
hi david, hey thanks for the props; if i lean towards unusual scales it;s probably 'cause i never learned scales properly, and being self taught, plus i do love eastern and indigenous music. I have to tell you, i've checked out your music a few times and two things: 1. i truly laughed uncontrollably and 2. your arranging skills are awesome, and i wish i had such a good ear. I'm glad you're getting more press and attention outside indaba, hopefully that will keep on.
Hey David. Thanks for commenting on my Erik Tuffaz- Big Wheel remix. A comment is great but a comment from you means so much more. The quality of your work is what I strive for.
hi david, "gnam gnam" is like... yum yum or alternatively .. a "good stuff" :) sorry... my english is bad.. I hope to have explained it well
David,
your "My Brain Is 1929" is a truly amazing masterpiece!
Your My Brain remix was absolutely amazing. I registered just to say that.
Had to check out your page after hearing your Rivers submission. It was fantastic! And Dude, i remember Ganster Fun! I'm pretty sure you guys, were on some of the Jump Up! compilations. And i'm pretty sure i saw you at Metro, at one of those Jump Up showcase type shows they used to have. I played in a 3rdwave band called the Shuttlecocks from 97-99. We were on one of the JumpUp comps, but can't remember if it was one of the same ones you were on. Anyways, just stopped by to give kudos on your Rivers submission. I got excited to see you were in Ganster Fun. Again, great work, and cheers!
Hey David. I just wanted to let you know what an incredible mix you've done; the level of composition, the musicianship, and your polished recording techniques are really something to aspire to. Bravo!
Ha ha! Well thats why im no longer with them, couldnt stand the thought of disrespecting your sis in law! My project Space Camp Stowaways has a myspace, check us out anytime man, that would be cool
Should have checked out your music sooner .. (since the cd compilation, people together ) .. Gonna go check out your music on cd baby, and so should everyone else that's diggin' these tunes!
Man when I come home to Michigan to visit I'd love to hook up with you. I gotta see how you work your magic man! Hey that's your new nickname! David "Magic Man" Minnick!
Hello Mr. Minnick. I absolutely loved your Weezer mix, so I checked out your profile, and your Bossa Nova-esque version of Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage" is incredible. The world needs more musicians like you.
Hey David I love "my Brian is 1929" The arrangement is incredible .It reminds me of a friend I owned a music store with (Keith Elliott) and his group. Have you heard of the Titanic Jazz Band?
Hey David, its been a minute since PBS, heard ur session "Peace Partners/Entropy". That project sounds real good man, excellent work. I'm in a Peace Partners session called "2012", check it out lemme know what u think. Be good, keep up the good work.
Hi D! Been away a while but I'm back in the hood and guess what! You've been busy! Congratulations on the PBS wins! No one deserves it more than the hardest working man out here. Hope the family's good. Stay blessed.
whats up man. so you entering the weezer contest? saw you on kennedy but not sure I have time right now for two contests. actually we submitted yesterday for the weezer thing, the vocal stems are not that bad to work with contrary to how some feel. cant wait to hear if you convert it to, or if you surprise and remix to polka. lol
