About Me

Skill Level:
Amateur
Craft:
live sound engineer
Instruments:
midi keyboard, electric guitar
Genres:
nu breaks, breakbeat, drum and bass, trance, electro

I've been in the live sound business almost eleven years. I originally started by taking sound classes so I could be a recording engineer, but fate changed that path. I worked for a nightclub for three years where I did front of house and monitors for many well known acts and a wide variety of genres I then moved onto a mobile sound company where I did more FoH and monitors for a variety of events for two years. I most recently did FoH and monitors for a church for 5-1/2 years where the stakes were raised even higher. I originally started remixing my band's tracks back in '93, and then my friend's tracks using a RY30 drum machine with synth waveforms and a Kawai K1 II synth. I then acquired an Alesis MMT-8 sequencer which changed everything.Today, I use Logic to remix or create my own tracks under the DiscoiD (pronounced Dis-Coid) name. I use a variety of soft synths, plug-ins, and the internal sampler of Logic, but I use some external hardware as well. Lastly, many of my tracks have electric guitar that runs through pedals and/or the plug-ins of Logic.

Extended

Band or Group:
DiscoiD
Influences:
The Prodigy, Meat Beat Manifesto, The Crystal Method, Kraftwerk, BT, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Chameleons
Favorite Lyric:

"There's a ghost in my house, I realize it's you"--Curve from the song "Perish" off of the CD Gift.

Dig your work, including Mariah mix...Awesome beats!

Ti Po wrote on September 14, 2008:

Hey Robert,
I just listened to your .wav file Mariah ReMix you sent me and it sounds AWESOME! Your mp3 upload just doesn't do justice to your mix that it should deserve, unfortunately this is the case with most of the over compressed mp3 files, but the pure wav file sounds awesome!
CONGRATULATION!

I've added two new remixes from last year to show some more variety. The first remix, Cesium 137 from Philadelphia, was one of the hardest remixes I've ever done. What do you do when you already think the original version is perfect? And what do you do when all the stems are in MIDI format (except for the vocal), and some aren't labeled clearly as to what they do?

Duran Duran probably needs no introduction to anyone. "Nite-Runner" was supposed to have been the second single off of "Red Carpet Massacre," but it has not seen the light of day yet. I honestly don't think this is one of Timbaland's best productions, so I had to make it better. The original version was plodding and had no momentum in the pre-choruses which I changed. I also jacked the tempo up I think to 125 bpm.

So I did cast my vote on your Mariah mix after all, due to its originality. For me originality and uniqueness is more important than many other things. Originality and uniqueness cannot be thought and are very rare and noble qualities! I checked out lots of mixes here and there were not many original ideas, especially good ideas among those I had the chance to listen to.
I cannot comment on the sound quality on your mix since I know the server where we uploaded the songs does a re-processing on the song file which makes the quality of a low bit rate mp3 sound file, but otherwise your mix is well balanced. Oh, and because I voted on your mix it doesn't mean that you are obligated to vote on mine, unless you really like it, but you do not have to inform me about it, unless you want to. It was my choice to inform you about my casted vote on your mix and that is why I wrote this comment and tried to be as honest as I could. May the force of creativity be with you! :-)

Ti Po wrote on September 9, 2008:

Thank you for your comment! yes, I wish too that my mix would be a little longer than it is, but I had only 4 days and basically this is what I was able to come up with.
I listened to your mix and I have to say that I like it. There are some nice elements and sounds in it I will listen to it more before I would decide voting on it or not, but again I like it so far. I'll let you know if I voted or not! Again thank you for the comment! :)

Brian F. wrote on September 7, 2008:

Hey man thanx for the kind comments. Lovin your beatz too well done. The speaker issue happened twice, basically it's new speakers (M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe) that have a great sound when they work and a reputation for not breaking down!! The customer service dude at the place I bought them thinks I'm the unluckiest man alive 8( Anyway they have a nice sound but a review I read recently said you may want to compensate for a lack of detail in the mids, and after listening to My MC mix in the cans a week or so after submission I think that there is maybe a little too much reverb in the high-mids. Unfortunately I didn't read the review til after submission and I only had 3 weeks to do everything due to entering late so couldn't digest and check again kinda thing til later. So there u go, a decent mix and a pile of excuses as to why it should've been better 8) In truth I'm actually delighted with how it turned out and think it bodes well for the future, first time i've ever really worked in such a disciplined fashion on a track and I learned a lot in the process, so soon the 2nd set of replacement speakers will arrive and I will be back in action. I'll stick you on contact dude, and i'll let you know when the next track is up, thanx again for listening B

Hey! I know, my work is share the people, feels exaggerated: love, or hate, I know risky, people are scream, or will empty the dancefloor..I tested It, and the peoples are liked. :) Of course, not everybody. That was the only solution for my, I don't like house remixes with too fast acapella. :) Best wishes!

Nowadays, Miley/Jonas are everywhere, so they're kind of hard to avoid when even just doing normal things in everyday life. Lol. If you get a chance, check out Miley's cover of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Personally, I think it's a great arrangement. As I said, mix-wise it could have been better, but the arrangement is pretty solid, whoever did that.... I gotta check out the credits...

Spikey Jay wrote on August 29, 2008:

Thanks for your feedback, Robert! Positive or negative, I really do appreciate it. You hit it right on the head with Line 6, btw lol ;) You know your shit, my friend, and I appreciate musicians like you. My guitar sounds could definitely be better, but nowadays, the quality of hit records is become less and less important. Have you heard the mixing on the new Miley Cyrus record? Personally, I think it could have been mixed much better - and yet, shes a million dollar seller. I guess my ultimate goal in this competition was to create something not only creative, and original, but something that could be marketed to the Tween demographic, the teens that are giving up millions of dollars on records like Miley's or The Jonas Brothers. I wanted to create a track for Mariah that could make her a rock star, in addition to already being an R&B sensation. Anyways, thanks again for your input - if you enjoyed my mix enough, I'd love for you to vote for it, as well as to get your friends to vote for it - especially to help get some Pop/Rock in the top 10 and make it a real competition between different genres of music =) Thanks again, Robert, and best of luck with everything! - Spikey Jay
