Besides being a musician and an engineer, I also consider myself a sound designer. It's not that I don't use presets if they work, but often times it's fun to "get under the hood," so to speak and tweak things a bit (or in my case, a lot). This contest takes things way beyond that for me in that I'm creating drums, leads, sound fx etc. out of the material given. The only artificial elements have been a synth bass and a pad. I just entered the contest yesterday, and as of now I've used fifteen elements. I'm sure by tomorrow that'll easily double.
I also enjoy the challenge presented by this contest in that there is no structure as there is in most other contests. Sure, taking someone else's song and make it your own--that's somewhat easy. Now try taking two-hundred eight unrelated sounds (well, really more than that when you listen to the samples) and create a song--that's not so easy. It's at times like these that I'm grateful to have a software sampler--Logic's EXS24--that I can run multiple instances of. Otherwise, I wouldn't have touched this contest with a ten-foot pole!
