About Me

Craft:
musician, songwriter
Instruments:
voice, percussion, keyboard
Genres:
experimental, jazz (all), latin
Influences:
Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah, Carmen, Leon Thomas, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman

When I sing in live performances, I usually do jazz standards in duos with guitarists or piano players, and I also do some vocal improvisation. I occasionally do recitals in which I sing classical pieces like Handel, Villa Lobos' "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5," or arias, and I have sung with a madrigal group. In my home studio, I write and record a lot of very different stuff, from experimental sound pastiches and soundtrack-like work to Latin-influenced songs and heavily percussive pieces. I have also written lyrics to other people's music, including Miles, Monk, Trane, Ornette and Joe Henderson. I cannot record their music, however, without permission from their estates, etc., so those lyrics are sitting in a music folder.

Extended

Favorite Lyric:

"Then you came along with your siren song to tempt me to madness.
I thought for awhile that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness
of a great love for me.
But I was wrong."
Billy Strayhorn at 16!

Day Job:

Working With Others

How I Work:

As noted in my blog, I am interested in collaborating with a Latin jazz guitarist to record some of my original songs. I also have a couple of unfinished pieces. I have done long-distance work with my nephew, who is a rock guitarist and drummer. His harmonic piece with my embellishment is the 14-minute soundtrack to a Columbia River Gorge scenic slideshow I put together with my photos.
Soundtrack work intrigues me.

Experience:

Lead singer in everything from jazz, rock, blues and latin/world music bands to singing backup vocals and playing percussion. I have been a part of jazz vocal ensembles, gospel groups, madrigal ensembles and singer in theatrical productions.

Equipment:

home studio, keyboard, conga and percussion.
