About Me

Skill Level:
Professional
Craft:
musician, composer
Instruments:
cello, piccolo cello, tabla, piano, clavichord, percussion
Genres:
british folk, nordic folk, classical, modern classical, indian classical, rock
Influences:
Bach, Ravi Shankar, Gustav Holst, Igor Stravinsky, beatles

I started out as a rock and roll drummer but switched to cello at 15 and later went to the SF Conservatory for composition. I now play cello with Anoushka Shankar, assist her dad in his composing for western instruments, play in Celtic groups with my wife and others, arrange and play for pop session, films stuff and whatever else come along. By the way, several influences won't "stick" in the influences but I'd like to mention how much the band VĂ¥sen has meant to me as well as fiddlers like Alasdair Fraser & Martin Hayes, guitarist Martin Simpson, and the whole "Newgrass" bunch of people too. www.myspace.com/barryphillipscello
