About Me

Skill Level:
Professional
Craft:
songwriter, musician
Instruments:
Guitar (All), 6-string banjo
Genres:
rock, alternative rock, americana, acoustic rock, acoustic, folk pop, indie rock, indie pop, rock and roll, pop rock, art pop
Influences:
Paul Simon, Neil Young, Frank Black, The Beatles, Husker Du, The Replacements, Jonathan Richman, Rem, Jane's Addiciton, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Carol King, John Lennon, The Jayhawks, Built To Spill, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Pixies, The Breeders, Elvis Presley

I was born in Minneapolis, MN in 1971 (where I lived until 1980 when my family relocated to Philadelphia). I grew up on the music of AM radio in the 70's and the pop sound of FM radio in the 1980's. I also grew up on American roots music. Most of my cousins, aunts, and uncles (and there are many) play guitar and sing. I come from a very musical family. A lot of what my family played as I was growing up was Christian folk, classic spiritual, roots country, and what is now called "Americana"... as the majority of my clan comes from a southern Baptist background, and hails from either Tennessee or Oklahoma. My band, on the other hand, has always been a decidedly secular rock power trio. I play guitar, sing, and write the songs for the group. I also do my fair share of studio production and engineering. In 1999 I purchased and renovated a commercial recording studio which I owned and operated for 7 years. The studio I owned was located in Vancouver Canada, was built in 1965, and called Mushroom Studios. The reason I bought it was because so many classic albums were recorded there in the 70's and 80's (Heart, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Loverboy, Led Zeppelin, Ringo Starr, Sarah McLachlan, Skinny Puppy, etc). As the industry began to decline several years ago I made the tough choice to sell it to another studio owner in town, and have been focusing on Marcy Playground ever since. I've read more than my fair share of articles by music writers who mention how my band was "influenced" by Nirvana. Truth is, my band is about as musically influenced by Nirvana as by Pearl Jam... which is to say; not at all. In the 90's we were influenced by many of the classic rock artists of the 70's, as well as many of the mid-to-late 80's underground bands (aka "alternative bands") that we idolized, such as; The Pixies, REM, Husker Du, The Replacements, The Cure, Jonathan Richman, Jane's Addiction, and Billy Bragg. My songwriting has always revolved around the notion that... if I can tell a GREAT story with a song, then hopefully I've written something that doesn't suck. And that's all I've ever wanted to do... write songs that don't suck. - John Wozniak

AN AMERICAN TUNE (Words & music by Paul Simon)

Many's the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and I've often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I'm all right, I'm all right
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
or driven to its knees
but it's all right, it's all right
for we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong

And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was crying

We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hours
and sing an American tune
Oh, and it's alright, it's all right, it's all right
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest

Hi John,
I'm doing fine. It is still a strange but wunderfull idea that it is possible to make music with people all over the world.
This week I'm going to work on some small details of Star Baby a capella. Just let me know if you have any suggestions.

David Frey wrote on November 12, 2009:

Hey John,

Thanks for the feedback. It means a lot coming from you. I'm reworking Thank You and should have Devil Woman up in the next couple days.

Johan K. wrote on November 9, 2009:

Hi John. Today I had some time to listen to all the winning tracks, just to have a 'sneak preview' , ha!
It really must have been a tremendous job for you all. Working with your songs was very inspiring and rewarding in itself. To me it was like discovering a whole new playground.

Cahen Z. wrote on November 6, 2009:

Thanks for surfing by and for lending me your stems, it’s a long learning process to get mixes right without help from others :) Keep up with the good job! I’ve looked at your homepage too, impressive media page, lyrics are great, songs too, totally recommendable! Give props to the band members so they don’t feel forgotten. I’m worthless as a fan, but I can send my friends to you on Spotify if they wanna sing karaoke:)

Hi, John- I see you are online and just wondering what is going on with the announcement, delay? Also, a dumb question but I was wondering if you are related to Steve Wozniak of Apple computer? ;)

Kai Lavatai wrote on October 26, 2009:

Greetings—I had a ton-o-fun remixing Gin And Money. The lyrics and the melody are moody, sexy and haunting. It's really awesome. Thanks !!

John....tremendous show last night at the Showcase Live world class facility in Foxboro. It was great meeting and seeing all of you!! Your songwriting, deliverance, and execution keeps getting better and better. As great as your studio sound is, you guys are off the charts in a "live" scenario. Hope you come back to see us real soon! Your friend always...Paul

Hey John, really like this album. Great tracks, straight from the heart !!! Genres and styles can change according to radio stations format and staff, but the song it self must have a strong foundation to work with and I think you achieved that very well !
Was a big pleasure to do a remix for "Blackbird" . Thanks for this chance

Jay H. wrote on September 29, 2009:

I've just been listening to the album apart from any remixing.... damn good album!! I know I've been a little detached trying to get with the remixes so I just had a listen to the album as a whole. I really, really think it's a groovy album. I don't know what it is when an album just clicks, fits right, sounds good, and all that. But the album is just really good! My remixes do sound good played loud in the car though! :o) The originals sound great too!! Couldn't make good remixes without good songs in the first place! I haven't checked out your tour schedule yet, but y'all should make a stop in Chattanooga! Ok, I'm rambling, I'm drinking, one of those nights... lol!

Woz, would love to catch up if you ever grace the shores of Melbourne again, let’s hope the sales of the remix album can get the both of us a holiday, I love New York im going back again next year. I’m almost done with the Gin & Money remix, it is sounding super sweet, even if I do say so myself, and I just did! Let’s hope the judging panel can agree. I took a different approach than the other versions that have been uploaded. I look forward to hearing the CD when it’s out.

thanks for taking time to listen and comment. I don't get much feedback on this site, so far.

Erik Veland wrote on September 20, 2009:

I just wanted to thank you personally for putting out the wonderfully intricate stems for your entire album. Downloading and playing with the "advanced" stems really gives me a newfound appreciation for the amount of work that's put into producing a pop tune today.

I also admire the way that you are personally involved in this. Most artists just "dump their stems" into competitions like this and it is all run by the site or industry slaves. Sometimes I doubt if the remixes even reach the ears of the artists.

So thanks for this wonderful opportunity and kudos for your involvement in the community. It's an inspiration!

beats banging wrote on September 19, 2009:

hello, I do enjoy remixing your songs even though they are not my chosen genre. umm I usually dont have access to the artist I am trying to remix. Normally I will get the accapella ,remix their song ,try to find someone in their circle to send it too and it ends up on my harddrive. Also they are normally rappers or R&B singers. I am going to try to hit all of the songs. You know about mixing of course, I mean listening all over the place to hear it on different speakers, I usually use the car with the kids in it and they know some of the words to at least two of the songs. Unfortunately at work they are tired of "blackbird" yet they know some of the lyrics . Their is no other way to put this but, can you check out my remixes( this part sucks) at your leisure and let me get some
feedback? Also I never heard of your band before this but I asked a friend and she said she loves your work and she likes my work. I have emailed her copies of the remixes for approval. She will be honest with me if they suck ass or not.

Harry

Hey Mr Woz, I would say welcome to Indaba but I won’t two reasons It’s been done I see... and you were here first, so where’s my cake? Hey I’m going to have a crack at remixing your track Gin and Money; don’t be scared I will be gentle and then see if it likes it rough, there is always control Z. Long flights huh? Peanuts and cards, and mini bars! I wonder if your butt could handle the plane trip to Australia I know it has before, but I double dare it again. I’d love to challenge thee to a rock off!! I will of course give you an advantage… your band.
My band Hyphen will admit defeat once we see you at the airport, but we will prepare our rock exercises daily, and bathe in awesome until the event... Anyhoo I have to go and take some calls now, my day job awaits… working in a call centre, now that’s how you develop a numb butt! Aeroplanes Ha!
