Hi Indaba community,
got to say that this is a nice place with kind people and good contests.
For the Roots Remix I was going for an epic sound to get the mellow chorus big.
Biggest Challange for me was to get the Chorus and the Verses together or in one flow. Listening to the Lyrics brought more confusion. In Verse truck north rapps:" get threated as a criminal if crime is all you know" the Chorus complains that "they got the nerve to treat me as a criminal". for me it was not really clear what kind of massege the song had. After thinking it over I came to the conclusion that the Verse is tellin the (Black) Community : "Hey man how do you behave" and the chorus "don't you know thats the shit where you in"
The Chorus was in original 24 Beats long i streched to 32 Beats because it made it more flow to me. I did it first with stoppin the vocals on "cash" and repeating the last sentence "and treat me like a criminal". The stoppin was a compromise solution but the repeating mirrord the feeling of realizing in a good way and fitted in to my concept. The sentence in Chorus " they cover the crash and I can see It's all about cash" was a sign to me to connect the song
to the financial crises we are now in. You here McCaine in the intro covering it followed by Ron Paul pointing out why such things happen. The key sentence here that brings us bak to the Message of the Roots is "All we creatin here is moral hazerd". Like Ron Paul trys like the Roots to avoid moral hazerd in their community.
Instead of lovly harmonies i decided to keep it more unisono to intense the message and to get more drama. Timpanis and Trombones and a bunch of strings did the job. The synthline that you here is a Theremine Sound created by a plugin. i keepd the verse and the Chorus rhytmacly simple to bring more intension to the message. My concept was it to create a Soundtrack for a elaction campagne. lol Three politicians verse the election slogan in the chorus.
Check the Remix and judge if i made a good job
