Kevin Cox

Kevin Cox is a composer and musician in the Seattle area. Originally a drummer/percussionist with a strong classical as well as rock background, he is also a singer and keyboardist and prides himself on creating music that is affecting, emotive, and unique. His diverse musical influences –ranging from classical to electronica, folk to rock, world music to avante-garde, progressive music to musical theater – add breadth to his compositional and songwriting skills.

This wide range of styles and experiences give Kevin's musical language its versatility, which includes rich orchestral scores to ambient synth underscores, pop/rock songs, downtempo electronica, music derived from other cultures, driving rock and roll, and cool jazz pieces. He enjoys creating new syntheses and textures from otherwise disparate elements, and is excited about the new methods and sounds coming from our global music village.

Kevin graduated from California State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, specializing in Percussion Performance, studying with Jack van Geem. He also studied piano in college and took courses in composition and orchestration. Following graduation he began vocal study, appearing in several north Bay Area opera productions as a chorus member, was a member of a Medieval/Renaissance music troupe as singer and percussionist, a member of the Sonoma Valley Chorale and Jazz Choir, and as a vocal soloist in churches, which he continues to do. As drummer/percussionist Kevin has performed with many pit orchestras, rock bands, the Pacific Crest Wind Symphony, the New England Philharmonic, and the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston. He later graduated from the Music for the Media film scoring program, studying with composer/orchestrator Chuck Fernandez.

Kevin strives to always create music that is appropriate for the media it is intended to accompany. He understands the importance of enhancing the emotional impact and actions in media productions. His music has been described as having the visual quality of Aaron Copland's music, and music always has been very visual to him.
