Long beach Musicians League

Long Beach Musicians League Mission Statement Our goal is to bring together all Long Beach Area Musicians to share knowledge and foster a learning environment for the advancement of personal growth in music. Why: When I moved to Long Beach I couldn't swing a stick without hitting a musician. I ended up playing music with a lot of competent, self critical musicians who could not seem to break out of the comfort zone that is the garage. Others I met played in bands one time or another, but they were too stuck living in their past to create anything new. When: Monday Nights at the Puka Bar Stage 8:00 to 11:00 pm. 710 Willow in LB. This is a rough idea of what a month would look like. First Monday Music theory and application. The night will include 1 hour lecture and 2 hours lab. The first week we will cover Alternate Tunings. Second Monday The goal is to get bands to unplug and listen to each other. Let's just say almost acoustic. Two Sets of music and some constructive criticism. Third Monday I hope to have LB Musician League members bring something to the table. New song ideas, if not I would like to bring in some authorities in the music business to answer questions. Fourth Monday Long Beach Huntington's Acoustic Electronica Noise Improvisational Freak Out All learning sessions will be recorded. All other ideas will be entertained. I hope to see all of you on January 7th 2008. Thanks, Long Beach Huntington

Almost Six Months Into The Long Beach Musicians League

When I started the LBML I had no idea what would happen. I had a great opening night, Stan Dewitt spoke about alternate tunings.  I had Sander Roscoe Wolf bring a night of experimental music.  Mr. B did the Loins share of bringing in new music with  two shows booked.  Both very entertaining.  I had one singer songwriter come in and set up his sound t his liking.  I had the April Fools Eve Ball with Long Beaches own King Killer's.  Some punk rock girls tore the joint up that night.  I had many empty nights where I would wonder why I was doing this. After setting up the stage for the Kareoke people I would soon forget the lack of interest in LBML and get to rehearsing my own music.  It is nice to have a crowd,  but practice on a stage with a good sound system is always nice.  I have had some people drift in and drink a beer and leave,  I have been asked by others what was going on,  some of those people are now booking time.  It took almost six months but LBML is starting to fill it's intended purpose.  I have feeling that once it picks up speed it will be the hottest place to be on a Monday Night! I am looking to do musician mix ups.  Building a band out of strangers is always  more fun with alcohol. Tonight I have a drummer, guitar and keys from one group  and a bass player, harmonica and another guitarist from another band.  It should be interesting! Most of these musicians are just getting used to a stage and monitors, so my goal for the night is just to get a groove going and play a simple song.  Next week, Bohemiean Rhapsody!
I have also met some great musicians on the weekends.  Most have had a good time, some played to loud, some needed a pre-amp on their vocals and their band to turn down and some bands should have ________.  The first six months there have been some noteable shows.  White Boy James, Rocking Rose, Dale Peterson, Paperplanes, Barry Bremmer and The Lap Steel Duo. To mention a few. One New Band really rocked and I hope to see them again, they are the Riff Raffs from LB, great set of music. See them if you get the chance.
We also have a Blues Jam on Sundays that has brought in a few interesting renditions of blues standards.
All in all the LBML has been a success, and even when it wasn't, I still had a free rehearsal space, or labratory, is how I like to think of it.
Let me know if you would like to book a gig/bill/rehearsal in the future.  For all of you that have come and participated I thank you.  For those of you who have not ventured out on a Monday Night in six months, you need to get out more often.

If anyone know the Riff Raff's have them contact me.

Long Beach Musicians League Moves Forward.

In the year and one month I have been doing what I call the LBML I have a had some dissapointments, some failures and some exceptional evenings of great performances.  In January we celebrated the one year anaversary with Experimental Music,  later in the month I had an instrumental power trio playing all orginals and last monday I was treated to an outstanding performance by Tsk Tsk.  For those of you who missed it I will be letting them back one stage whenever they want, be sure to keep an eye out for them.
And finaly I was contacted by Kyle(Not Robot Not Human) with a request to promote a night of experimental music. I decided to let NRNH have the fourth Monday of the month. In our conversation Kyle mentioned bringing music that is rarely heard to wider audience, I agree. Music or sound can be much more than Mustang Sally or Social D, Some music needs to take a break it's tired.
In the year I did sound for bands I saw 20 diffrent Rock a billy bands and 20 competent covers of Jakson, We all know Johnny and June sang more than that one song, expand you catalog.
Sorry I got off on a tangent.
Back to Kyle, I am gald to have some one to help me divide the month up by 1/4th. Kyle is now booking the fourth Monday of every month at the Puka. If you know of any acts that are not the norm, build their own instruments, involve video, sound and strange electronic gizmos please get in touch with NRNH or myself. I welcome Kyle and wish him success in expanding everyones musical horizons. We all could use a little perspective shift.

As for the Rockabilly bands I enjoyed and appreciated your musical chops and ohmage to all of the greats, but when all of the bands are doing the same songs is looses something.
Hell Johnny Cash had like 40 albums theres gotta be something else you can do.
New Orginal Ecclectic Sonic Experimental Textural Diffrent Dissonant   Extra Ordinary  Not Robot Not Human in conjunction with the Long Beach Musicians League @ the Puka Bar every 4th Monday of the month.

New Music Mini Fest

Friday February 06, 2009 at 01:33 AM

I am currently a sound tech at a Long Beach Venue the Puka Bar and part time booker of bands.  I am looking to do an event in Sept. The event will be to spotlight or showcase a new cd that was recorded this summer.  I am looking for Original Bands to play my Mini Fest. The only thing needed is original material. If this interests anyone, lets bounce some ideas around.
