Solja Life Records

Solja Life Records Inc. is an independent record label that was created in January of 2001 in Bridgehampton, New York. The Company is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. By CEO Keton "Solji" Cole, a U.S Marine for over eleven years and a student of New York University's Entertainment and Media Management Program. Solji spent several years doing extensive market research, networking, testing potential target markets, building a catalog of beats and setting up the infrastructure for the Company. He then signed the first group to the label in 2005, Gangsta Colony. They later became known as Kolony.
Kolony is a group of hip-hop artists living in Jamaica. They have their own uniquely refreshing sound. This sound comes from their mixing of Jamaican dancehall with traditional U.S. hip-hop. This new sound gave birth to a new sub-genre called dancehall/hip-hop, which represents both cultures from which this new sound came. The Company released its first official mixtape from the group, called “100% Jamaican the Mixtape”, in 2007. The mixtape is now available online at Itunes, Rhapsody, Amazon Mp3, Napster and CDBaby among several other digital distributors.
In early 2008 Solja Life Records started attending a few song writers’ pitch-a-thons. Where the Company would pitched songs to several industry executives, in an effort to be considered for future projects. In August 2008 two (2) of the Company's songs, "Burning Bridges" and "Love Song", were picked by an executive from MTV Networks. SLR was contacted about a month later by MTV Networks, who wanted to license the songs that they had picked at the pitch-a-thon for their programming and video games. However after hearing more tracks from SLR’s catalog they finally decided to license eight (8) songs and thirty one (31) instrumentals for their programming and video games.
Solja Life Records Inc. will be releasing Sly’s, Kolony’s leader, debut album in the summer of 2009. Sly's album will feature five (5) of the songs licensed by MTV Networks. Some of which can be heard at Soundtrack.mtv.com/profile/SoljaLifeRecords.
