This is an exciting time for me. Having recording years back in 24 Track studios with producers, I have a good handle on what can be done now with online session work. I love what the internet means for musicians now. I see many possibilities not just for collaborating, but pushing towards excellence in recording quality. Producers and Record Companies will wake up one day and manage their projects online. If they aren't already!
I enjoy having to push myself technically, sonically, and in perfomance. Recording drums is more than performing them. Many times it is about what things will sound like once tracked. Striking a floor tom and knowing what that will translate to when mixed and how it pertains to that part of the song rather than over stimulating a part with too many fills. Being creative and playing the song are what I consider my greatest contributions to artists. There are songs that require more technical featured rhythm patterns which always makes them fun to play. I guess knowing what to do and when is a huge advantage when doing session work through mediums like the internet and Indaba. Communication, although extremely important, doesn't always translate. I guess that is where you use your instincts, experience and musical background to make that first great impression. I have learned that approaching internet based projects is completely different that conventional means of recording. Things like "idea" tracks become a staple in the methodology because steps like "pre-production" aren't a reality. It's all about getting the best result possible!

Working With Others
- How I Work:
Oh Yes the business end of things:
Typically, if I find a project that I think would be fun, creatively challenging, want to be involved in, stretches my cognition or I want to try out some new gear, I will give my time.
If you hear my contributions and you think I am the right guy for your song, I most likely will ask for compensation.
Tommy's philosophy:
I look at it this way, I would like to cover my monthly payment on my "In House Account" at the local music store. It has built up a bit trying to get all this great gear to get you awesome quality tracks. That, and I have to buy sticks/heads/coffee etc... every once in awhile. I'm not proud to say it, but I'm cheap!Dont be afraid!
Invite me to a session and see what happens. I also have a problem saying no. (Is that too revealing?)Ok, so how do I work: (Please READ THIS)
I need 3 tracs to sync together in my software.
1. Two reference tracks
I would prefer a reference track with drums and another without. If I have to write parts it makes me cranky. It also ups the fee! As writers, I expect that you have a great idea for the rhythm of YOUR song. Otherwise, I become a writer of sorts.
2. A click or metronome track. Can you take me seriously?:
Me..................no, but I do take drums pretty seriously and I am my own worst critic. So you may get a track from me and think it is good. I may decide to jerk that track and do it again for my own sake. Better for you and better for me.The Best way to save time and energy:
I usually do not waste a bunch of time with preliminary (idea/audition) tracks. These are throw aways and I can't spend the time fretting over little nits here and there. They are idea tracks and I will usually label the file as such like (SongTitleDrumsAud1). If the song gets re-arranged or you have another idea about a part. I can refrain from wanting to hire a hit man to find you because it was only an idea track and I just banged it out. No problem!Studio Magic!
Now, on the rare occassion that I just bang a track out and catch a little studio magic in the process with a part that just fell together or settings that are magical, I will let you know that it is special (meaning, I don't know if I can pull that off again and I will advise you to take it). However, your the boss in the end. Since I have the opportunity to write these thoughts down, I thought it would be nice that I call the shots for a minute or so.PS: If I work on a song for you and for no charge and you accepted my participation, please be curteous and complete the song in a timely matter. That means mixed and preferrably mastered to some degree. There is nothing like sweating for someone and having them dismiss your efforts by not following through! There is enough of that on the internet. There are alot of songs that I have that were the last track I sent to the artist and never heard back. If you paid me, you dont have to send me squat! If you didn't pay me, then don't be a bad little monkey!
Which brings me to my final point: I get a copy of the song in WAV or a copy of the CD complete with credits to me for my parts. (Yes, you have to spell my name right) Get names before you print CD jackets.
I also get the rights to licensure and use the song as part of my profiles both on Indaba and other sites. The final songs will never be downloadable. They will be referenced as an online listen only. Unless my mom wants a copy- Got a problem with that?
