It's a Beautiful Sound

About Me

Skill Level:
Professional
Craft:
songwriter, musician, recording engineer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, producer
Instruments:
Bass, Guitar (All), Keyboard (All), Voice (All)
Genres:
classic rock, acoustic, country rock
Influences:
Eagles, Poco, Jackson Browne, Mike Nesmith, Paul Simon, CSNY, Buffalo Springfield, Kenny Loggins, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Aaron Copland

It's really all about the music. So, let's start there. I'll get to some personal history, shortly.

If my musical efforts on this page happen to pique your interest, all twenty songs from my newest CD, Too Old to Rock & Roll, can be listened to with streaming audio at:
http://www.cheznims.com/songs/

The primary purpose of this site is collaboration. I've been fortunate in that I stumbled upon a small cadre of Indaba members with whom I share musical tastes and talent. So much so that we've formed an informal, ad-hoc "virtual" band. (It has to be "virtual"; the six participants inhabit three separate continents!) Nothing official, mind you, but, in various combinations, we've collaborated on over a dozen songs. I've compiled these collaborations into a "virtual" CD titled...with tongues planted firmly in our collective cheeks...Kevin Sweeney's We're 'Old Farts' Club Band. If you want to hear what Indaba makes possible, musically, check out:
http://www.cheznims.com/oldfarts/

I'm also involved, as a performer and producer, with "Peace Partners", a project being organized here on Indaba that was created to bring together musicians from around the globe to compose and collaboratively record songs dedicated to the twin ideals of peace and freedom. (It's where I first encountered my fellow 'Old Farts', mentioned above.) Peace Partners has evolved into an incredibly rewarding musical experience. A selected sample of some already-completed "Peace Partners" songs can be found at:
http://www.cheznims.com/peace/

To learn more about...and possibly participate in...this amazing project, visit the Indaba "Peace Partners" Group page at:

So much for the mandatory musical promotions. Now on to the boring bio "stuff".

I was a musician, sound engineer and producer during most of the '60s, '70s and early '80s.

As a musician, I played in a country-rock band named "Heather". We were popular (and lucky) enough in our geographic area (the Midwest) to share the stage in various venues with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Lonnie Mack, John Hartford, Pure Prairie League, and Loggins & Messina, among others. Those were heady times, indeed.

Studio work provided an even more extensive musical education. As a studio musician and sound engineer I had the privilege of playing with and/or pushing the pots for Loggins & Messina, John Hartford, Errol Garner, Leonard Bernstein (Yep, THAT Leonard Bernstein! Most people don't realize that he recorded portions of "The Mass" at Counterpart Studios, in Cincinnati.), Bootsy Collins, Midnight Star, Livingston Taylor, and Roger Trautman, to name a few...and even managed to insinuate my frantic fingers into the final mix of a Grammy-nominated album, "Wanna Make Love (Come Flick My Bic)", by Capitol recording artists, Sun.

Ahhh...three-inch 3M tape, acetate masters (from King Studios, no less, home of the early James Brown hits!), 16-track studio boards, tape splicing, spring-mounted echo chambers, analog recording, manual mixdowns...again, fun times!!

Then, I took a 15-year musical sabbatical...during which, as a full-time freelance writer, I managed to publish over 30 books, 1500 or so magazine articles and a couple dozen science-fiction stories.

It's been a long and creatively satisfying life.

And, now, I've returned to my first creative love: music.

I recently set up a rudimentary recording studio in my basement, using the incredible PC technology available today, and started writing and recording new songs.

Man, this stuff is amazing...um...the technology, not necessarily the songs, although I'm proud of those, as well -- but I'll let y'all judge their merit.

Enjoy all this music...and make some of your own. It's what being a member of Indaba is all about!

Jack

Favorite Lyric:

"You got to roll with the flow, wherever it goes, even if it rolls out of here." (Michael Nesmith - "Roll With the Flow")

Hi Jack...thank you...high praise indeed..and humbly appreciated. The Byrds and the Hollies were in my original list of influences..but somehow the list got "disappeared" in the ether?!

Travis Charbeneau wrote on May 15, 2009:

Hey Jack -- I especially liked "Fog of War" and "Distant Light." Since you seem to have all your guitar bases covered except steel, maybe you'd be interested in some dedicated lap steel. No pedals, so not very Nashville, but, except for a bit of dobro, it's all I do. Continue onward for to truck! (Isn't that what Mr. Natural sez?)

Actually, being from southwest Ohio, I'm more a University of Cincinnati and Xavier fan. My son, Jason, graduates from U.C.'s Aerospace Engineering program, this spring. (He's also following in his dad's musical footsteps, somewhat. He co-wrote "It's a Beautiful Sound", on which he plays guitar, sings most of the lead vocals, and even contributed the trumpet solo.) He and I headed south to the Orange Bowl, last month, to watch U.C. lose a heartbreaker to Virginia Tech. But the trip was loads of fun.
