Bio

Here's a little bit about me...

I've been playing acoustic guitar since 1995. In '98 I started writing songs, singing, and also started getting interested in recording. I turned my bedroom into essentially a recording studio with a mattress (my parents were thrilled!) and started recording my music and the music of other bands I knew.

Over the years I grew to love not just playing music but the instruments themselves. I started collecting acoustic guitars and other stringed instruments both to play and to admire. Throughout high school and college I played in a few bands and had a great time playing at venues like Toad's Place in New Haven. While in college I also had the privilege of working for Indaba co-Founder Mantis Evar in '02 while he was at Blue Note Records, and for Virgin Records Chairman & CEO Matt Serletic in '03 and '04. While working I mainly focused on a 14-disc joint release that Blue Note was collaborating on with Verve Records. It was called The Definitive Series and it's a great collection of Jazz ranging from Stan Getz to McCoy Tyner to Chet Baker.

During the school year I was also working with another Indaba co-Founder, Matt Siegel, on launching Veritas Records, a not-for-profit student run record label in Cambridge, MA. We worked with a number of great independent artists, including DJ Shiftee, a DMC World DJ Battle Champion. When graduation came around I knew that I wanted to work in digital music but not at a record label. Matt, Mantis and I were particularly excited about the distribution and promotional tools that existed online for independent artists. But no one was fostering a real community of musicians online and providing tools for them to communicate and work on recording projects together. So we started working on Indaba Music. We figured out pretty quick that we didn't know how to code websites and were incredibly fortunate to find Jesse and later Chris to do the hard work.

So what you see is what we've been doing day and night for the last 5 years along with a great team of people passionate about our product and our community. Hope you like it.

How I Work With Others

Overview

I'm pretty open to working with people in different ways. To be honest, I don't have a lot of time to play music right now but, when I do here's I basically work in one of three ways:

1) I load up Logic and find or create a beat to start with and then just start building on top of that using my guitars, voice, and midi instruments. These are just rough sketches that (hopefully) will be fleshed out sometime.

2) I sit down and noodle on the guitar and record with my iPhone just to capture the ideas. When I play guitar I try to ALWAYS record it. Partly for nostalgia sake (I was a history major and love documenting things) but also so I can go back later and remember ideas I had.

3) I get together with friends (usually my friends Peter Yoon and/or Josh Robertson) and play music. These tend to be really fun, really unproductive jams where we just mess around.

We haven't worked together on Indaba.

Dan is a talented musician, he pals around with trouble-makers like Chris Danzig. Be wary of those that associate with Danzig. Be very wary.
