About Me

Skill Level:
Semi-Pro
Craft:
musician, producer
Instruments:
electric bass, piano, keyboard, electric guitar
Genres:
rock, ambient, space
Influences:
Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Brian Eno

I started playing music in the mid-70s, when music recording technology was getting more elaborate, and musicians were experimenting with the new tools. I still feel that technology is making new forms of music possible, especially in a social networking context.

I have a music composition degree from Columbia College in Chicago, under the direction of the late jazz composer/arranger William Russo. I studied jazz and classical intensely during this period, as well as aleatory and experimental methods (which I still do to this day).

I write and play music like a painter paints, i.e. I go through periods, I do sketches, studies, I experiment. Since I like the visual arts almost as much as I like music, the domains are always cross-pollinating. I particularly like to apply avant garde techniques, but often retreat to song forms.

I have written hundreds of compositions over the years in a myriad of genres. I self-produced 10 or more albums of music, primarily ambient music or film music. (See my website leebarry.net for a discography)

In the early 90s, I experimented heavily in altered tunings for bass (and guitar), and in 1992, self-published a book on alternate tunings, which is now available as a free download at:

I have a number of demos that are in various stages of completion. The 'Spychodrama' tune now has taken on a life of 90s-era Pink Floyd, when in fact it began in an alternate tuning which then evolved into a trip-hop vibe. I have canned this one in hopes that it will gel with other pieces into an album of some kind. If we do collaborate I might give you the tracks and you can 'Reason' with them.

I totally understand priorities, but if you manage your creative time wisely (including the time AWAY from the studio, the work eventually gets done. Many artists in history have been able to raise families while pursuing their craft.

I wouldn't doubt that musicians have applied some of the techniques in my book--which is exactly what I intended. Sonic Youth has used lots of different tunings in their work, but it might even pre-date my book. I still would love to do an entire album in nothing bu altered tunings.

yeah absolutely, it would be great to do some stuff with you. I'll note at this point that having a 1-month old really slows me down at the moment. I do believe that in this day and age producers are a little spoiled for equipment, I only use Reason and a little cubase but the creative power they have is astounding. Once you get past the basics every feature has something unique you can explore with it. I noticed that you said about writing a book on alternative tunings, you may want to have a look at the guitar tab for Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream" and see if you recognize any techniques they may have adopted from you, cos the timing would be about right. Anyway let me know what kind of thing you would like to work on and we'll see what happens.

hey man thought spychodrama and dark park were outstanding, would ask you to vote for my mariah thing but upon listening to your stuff i realise it's probably a little beneath you, if you could listen and give me any pointers it would be much appreciated tho
