Lulacruza *.

Lulacruza weaves female vocals, South American instruments, found sound objects and field recordings through electronic manipulation. A duo from Colombia and Argentina, Alejandra Ortiz and Luis Maurette make primal songs linking the hypermodern and the ancient. Their music unfolds as hypnotic prayers and electronic folk with nymph-like vocals; aquatic textures and up-tempo, handcrafted South American rhythms.

Alejandra Ortiz sings and plays the Colombian cuatro, shruti box, tar and Kalimba. Luis complements with percussion, charango, Amazonian flutes and electronic processing and sequencing. On their live shows they combine songcraft, improvising and looping, often granting the listener with enchanted voyages in place.

After meeting at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, in 2003, Lulacruza has played in over 25 cities in 5 countries and his music has been included in documentaries in Colombia, Argentina and Mexico, as well as compilations in Italy, the USA and Venezuela.

They are currently based in the San Francisco bay area, where they perform and work on material for their third album. In 2008, they were Artists in Residence at the Red Poppy Art House, and recipients of the Zellerbach Family Foundation Grant & the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation Grant.
