Team Indaba took the Q train out to Coney Island last night for the Daft Punk show...and it was definitely worth the 40 minute subway ride. I've loved their music for a few years now, probably ever since Dan first introduced me to the Interstella 5555 DVD when he was working at Virgin (if you haven't seen it, it's worth finding yourself a copy - DP commissioned an amazing cartoonist and "space opera" composer to create a movie with no dialogue set to the Discovery album). I also find that people who aren't that into electronic music do tend to like Daft Punk anyway; I think they have broader appeal than most in the genre.
The show was an amazing exhibition of Daft Punk's talent - these guys can mix 4 of their songs together and never miss a beat - at one point I thought I was listening to every song on an album simultaneously. And the visual spectacle that accompanies the music is incredible too. The show starts with the two guys in their trademark robot outfits atop a giant pyramid (as is their usual m.o., you never see their faces), with some mild lighting effects. The lighting and its synchronization with the music escalates from there, and by the end of the show you're entirely convinced that there are aliens on stage controlling an incredible display of digital graphics, neon lights and excellent tunes.
An excellent, excellent show. If you have the opportunity to see Daft Punk live, make sure you do. And it didn't even rain, despite an 80% chance of precipitation!
