Bio:
Meilana McLean Gillard (b. London, 1981) is a Tenor Saxophonist and Composer who enjoys creating genre blurring music with strong jazz roots. She began to play piano at age 7 later picking up the saxophone at age 11. Her curiosity remained peaked through high school and college as she won several awards and honors for both improvisation and composition. She studied under Beatles' Saxophonist, Gene Walker the majority of her high school and college years. Gillard moved to NYC in 2003 to continue her collegiate music education at the New School University where she studied privately with Seamus Blake, George Garzone, David Glasser and Tim Price. While at the New School, Meilana began to play with master drummer Charli Persip in both his Big Band "Supersound" and hi quintet. In 2007 Persip recorded Gillard's composition "Intrinsic Evolution" as the title track for his latest Big Band recording. In 2006 Meilana played on Joan Osborne's release "Breakfast In Bed" with Alto Saxophonist Greg Osby who later signed her to his record label "Inner Circle Music". Her debut album "Day One" was released in October 2008. It features 8 original compositions. Gillard has performed with Christian McBride, Lauren Sevian, and the Diva Jazz Orchestra.

Working With Others

How I Work:

I can record at home or come to you. I'll consider working pro bono on sessions that I feel are particularly alluring or as time allows. For horn section type work and arranging, I definitely require payment. I can arrange for most any sized ensemble. For song creation/production/co-writing we'd have to discuss that in detail.

I don't have paypal set up yet, but i will accept it soon and consider alternate methods of payment.
cheers!

Hey Meilana... St. Paul & I were talking about having you rock an instrumental track on the album just to flip it up... you're already incredibly talented as a producer AND instrumentalist... so it almost makes perfect sense for that... we were thinkin' about a 3-4 minute long song, maybe some relevant vocal samples playing along in the background... you can make the beat & then play whatever you want to do over top of that... we are kind of in need of some jazzy/blues infused hip-hop sounding tracks for the mixtape; so if that's what you'd be interested in doing, that would be PERFECT!

I think it would be a good look on the tape to have one sick instrumental type track for the M.C's out there to write to on the album... i know I would if i liked the song... anyways... hala back and let me know if you're still interested... thanks

p.s. btw...we can wait til after the Classified contest to start putting this together; i myself have been ironing on what i hope to be the winning track too... good luck...

peace K-1

Thanks. When we plan to go out, i thought it would be fun and play in the big city again. I'll at least go to a few jazz clubs and watch some players out there. this way I can make some phone calls and possibly get an idea of whats around at the time.

DigiTube AWS wrote on April 23, 2009:

Sure, let me know when. I have a few projects I'm on now but no deadlines, just my monthly podcast by mid next week. Let me know what you have in mind for a collab.
I have some musical ideas with a sax part I played on keyboards along with rhodes, bass, drums and guitar. I could start a session and invite you when you're ready.

cheers,
DigiTube (Scott)
