Working With Others

How I Work:

As of now I will be using the software here to learn how to mix and master music so I can finish building my home studio in my basement. I don't mind helping people out and putting down tracks but I'm limited right now since my studio isn't finished. I need to get an interface for my mics that works with phantom sound. I'm still researching on what i want. I will mainly be checking out your programs and using unfinished projects to get a feel on how to mix and master music tracks. I'm new at this part of the business. I just played into the mics before now. I also work many hours and sometimes can't get to the computer for days. so be patient if It takes me a day or 2 to answer any questions.

Experience:

I spent 3 years as a music performance/ed major at Kent state university. Played with several house bands and played with Blues Puddin in the early-mid 90's. The Bidnessmen for 2 years always as a sax and keyboard player. sometimes background vocals.

Equipment:

1960's Couf soprano sax, G. Ponzol professional clarinet. Audio Technica instrument mics.
I need to replace my alto and tenor. Had to sell them over winter.

Brilliant work, Randy Johnson! I am Allan Blanks and I'm enjoying my listening experience very much. I like your introductions, they totally set the mood and your music tells cool stories instrumentally and vocally. Do visit me sometime and take a listen. Again, brilliant art. Peace and rock on, Allan Blanks.

Sorry Randy,
Didn't know the "back and forth" dialogue would end up on your profile page. You can delete it after reading! didnt mean to muck up your page.

Hey Randy,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Thanks for the comment on my page here at Indaba. Well, I am excited for you in your new adventure. After reading your profile, it is obvious that your performing skills are well honed. Now, the technical part huh? I too was more heavily involved in doing records in the 80's and touring etc... but my passion has always been in the studio. To me, every since I was a kid, that is where the magic happened. The stuff nobody else who wasn't party to the process knew what what going on!
Your new adventure into your studio will be a fun journey!

I read some of your questions regarding gear etc... I think I may be able to help here. I built my project studio around 5 years ago, with a major push and remodel in December 2007.
I love it and thought I would never be able to say that I am genuinely happy with all my selections for gear. If you are a musician, engineer type, you will realize that I just said a mouthful, cause very rarely will anyone make that comment without sending thousands and thousands to make it happen :) I went for a modest approach, but used my head when it came to specs, I selected gear that most of the real gear heads would scoff at, but am able to pull off some great projects. If you remember that 90% of everything you do is in the "mix", then you will be on the right track when selecting gear. I always had it in my mind that I had so much to learn about mixing, that I couldn't be stupid enough to have to have all the best gear. I knew better! I knew my limitations wouldn't be the gear as much as it was my knowlege! As it turned out, I was dead on the money. My knowlege and technical skills have grown leaps and bounds and I am producing many projects now for groups that are hearing what I can do and approaching me to produce them. Some of which have payed for studio time just a year ago and had a release.
All this and guess what, I can truley say that I still haven't out grown my gear. As a studio owner, that is a very peaceful thought.
If you are getting my vibe on this, I can offer some suggestions for gear.
Thanks again for your comments on my page.
Tommy

Hey Randy, to answer your question...I'm not really the one to ask because I'm not into sessions in clubs really but definitely check out Fat Cat, Smalls, Smoke, St. Nick's Pub... I hope that helps even a little :)

Basically i want to get back into music and hope to make new friends while making music. I still have a lot to learn and I want to learn with other people. Not too many jazz people where I live. Even though I don't mind playing other styles either. All of them are challenging and fun.
