I have played guitar and harmonica for about 25 years. I am self-taught and have a limited understanding of music theory.
I got into guitar because I wanted to be songwriter. I still enjoy writing and singing songs, but that process takes a long time. Sometimes music comes when the words don't.
I used to perform quite a bit, but fell away from it for a few reasons. This is an interesting surrogate.
I have a relatively stable job that affords me a lot of free time. Music is just one of my interests. For the last six months I have been playing bluegrass/country music a lot, and lately have tried to get back into singing.
I want to collaborate and share with people I can learn from.
I'm interested in just about any kind of music from anywhere in the world.
This seems like a good place to share my music.
If you have a moment, leave some comments, suggestions, or ratings. Many of these tunes are works in progress.
peace,
patton

- How I Work:
i have various ways of making music.
1) sometimes when i play guitar a phrase or progression comes, and i will quickly record it on garageband or on facebook, then i will play with it for a few days, see if i can fit it into a basic song structure, add to it or alter it. then i'll record it into gb with my guitar in my livingroom to a shaker beat,
then, depending on the tune, i work out a very basic rhythm track...usually with an acoustic bass loop and simple drum pattern.
at that point i'll rerecord the guitar paying attention to levels and timbre etc,
when there's a satisfactory guitar take i experiment with different harmonicas to explore melodic/harmonic lines. an example of this is found on"sunday all right", in which one can hear both A and D diatonic harps.
at that point i'll look for loops, or play those lines with a midi controller starting with the rhythm section on up...
sometimes i take loops and chop them up and re-edit them to get the lines i want.
sometimes i listen to a loop, figure out how to play it, and bang out variations on the midi controller or guitar, recording as many different ideas as i can think of.
then i take these ideas, try them out with software instruments that work in that song style, and add them to the tune.
i will let things sit for long periods and do different edits.
when that's done, it's time for lyrics...which used to come easy but now take so long.
2) if i'm not starting from a guitar, i start with an unfamiliar tempo, then shaker pattern to build a rhythm figure. do that a few more times to get complementary rhythm figures that can be arranged into a structure,
then work from bass loops or midi controller to develop melodic and harmonic ideas like above.
finally, look at guitar, harmonica or software instruments for other timbres that work in that song style.
add lyrics and stir.
3) I wake up and say " I %#$%@ hate techno." so write an "ubertechno" piece and am hailed as "herr ubertechnogruppenmeister". Of course, despite mein sturm und drang meisterpiece, techno continues to suck.
4) assorted oblique strategies

Hey Patton,
Thanks for reaching out. I do play trombone. Do you have something specific you're looking for on serotonic? Those are trumpet and flute loops right now, right?
Talk soon,
Nick
thanks man means a lot : ]
and ya k-os actually contacted indabamusic to message us about it before the contest even ended pretty cool, but were totally honored to be on an album with all of these pro people
It was really a great experience working with you on Nocturnal. Great music and you are a great human being and collaborator. I want to do more music with you.
Your stuff is really awesome! I can actually hear you having fun on the other side of these tracks... it's got me smiling :)
Hey Patton - I look forward to taking this site for a whirl. If you're really unfortunate, I may attempt to drum on one of your tracks ;)

I've been away from Indaba for a bit too. I find I come back every few months as I'm going through old emails. It's a great resource though, I can see that.
I wouldn't be available to help out with Serotonic right now but I'm sure you'll be able to find the right time in this community. In the meantime I hope you're enjoying or have already enjoyed your trip.
All the best,
Nick
