Rob Cross was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved around a lot.
He spent a year in Sweden when he was in the fifth grade, where being from
the US made him something of a celebrity among his classmates. He was raised
by a single mother and worked during high school to help make family
expenses. "I always loved dancing and all kinds of music," Cross recalls.
"My mother would often quiz me on the popular artists of the day as she
scanned through the radio." The album Enter the Wu-Tang hooked him on hip
hop and bumping beats, but he didn¹t get serious about music until he
discovered the bass guitar. "Something about the bass was sexy," he says. "I
love the low rumble and the way it provides the glue that holds everything
together."

At the University of California, Santa Cruz, Cross studied recording
technology and electronic music, played in bands and co-created the
CuisNart, an interactive music program that allows players to synch up four
live vocal or instrumental channels with six drum loops that can be
reversed, slowed down, sped up or edited in real time. Cross produced,
arranged and engineered two ambient electronic albums for his band Deepfried
- The House at the End of the Road, which used squeaky box lids, broken door
handles, and analog synths as percussion instruments, and Incense. The
records are regularly featured on Nic Harcourt¹s NPR show, Mornings Become
Eclectic.
