About Me

Skill Level:
Professional
Craft:
producer, recording engineer, mixing engineer, musician, songwriter
Instruments:
electric guitar, electric bass, drums, clarinet
Genres:
rock, metal, classical

Spikey Jay is primarily a mixer, but also a producer, engineer, songwriter, and musician. He is a classical clarinetist of 15 years, rock drummer of 14, and classical/rock guitarist of 11 years. He studied Classical Guitar Performance for a year at New York University, and then went on to study music production, engineering, and mixing at The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music under award-winning producers/engineers such as Jim Anderson and Nick Sansano. With this training, Spikey Jay believes that he has developed the skills, but most importantly the ears, to create professional sounding mixes.

Spikey Jay works primarily with pop, rock, and metal artists. His mixes are like skyscrapers - a powerful drum and bass section, that supports a tower of guitars, with a delicate vocal sitting on top. In each of his mixes, he strives to achieve a balance of power and clarity, and even in his most intense metal mix, every element is crystal clear.

His mixes have received acclaim from Grammy award-winners such as Kevin Killen and Tony Maserati. In October 2007, he was featured on MTV-U as an up and coming music producer. He also received two "Best Mix" awards and one "Best Production" award during The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music's Remmy Awards in 2006 and 2008.

More recently, an essay he wrote on the metal group Killswitch Engage, entitled "Can You Handle This?", was featured in the June/July 2008 edition of Perfect Sound Forever online music magazine. You can read his essay here: http://www.furious.com/perfect/killswitchengage.html

Working With Others

How I Work:

I would love to mix your music. If you're interested, drop me an email at spikeyjay@gmail.com

Mixing Rates: Anywhere from $100 - $750 per song. If you've got a vocal and a basic two-track instrumental stem that just needs tweaking (3 channels in total), I can mix your tune for $100. If you've got a song with a PLETHORA of tracks in the session (I'm talking like 40 or more channels) chances are it will be closer to $750. I'm very much open to negotiation, especially if you have multiple tracks that need mixing.

I also can edit your songs for you if you need things done quickly. $100/song to edit.

Experience:

In addition to mixing, producing, engineering, writing, and performing on a plethora of tracks, I've also mixed dialogue, narration, and effects stems for more than 10 High-Definition extreme sports television episodes for Rush HD, channel 734 on IO.

Equipment:

I am an in-the-box mixer, which means I only use Pro Tools and plug-ins to create professional-sounding mixes. There are a number of incredible in-the-box mixers in the world, such as Charles Dye and Serban Ghenea, and I hope to one day join their ranks. Did you know that Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" was the first number one record to be mixed completely in-the-box? Fun fact for the day.

Spikey thanks for the comment bro...I dunno if you found the link to vote but either way its all gud...this is all about much more than votes at the end of the day! U entering the K-OS contest?

Man I really missed you on the boards. Wish you had been there. You gonna do any Indaba comps in the near future?

Hi Spikey, saw your comment on the boards and would really appreciate any feedback you could give on our Criminal remix. I know DnB isn't "huge" that side of the pond, so fresh perspective would be valuable.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Hey Spikey you have critiqued my works in the past (IBLULT MC Contest) and I like the straightforward and technical approach you bring forth. If you could listen to the Criminal Remix I would appreciate the feedback. Admittedly there's a lot of things I could have added to this mix came upon this contest rather late in the game. Nevertheless, always willing to listen to a pro's opinion.

Hey Man, I really appreciate you responding with constructive feedback. I know what you mean about Full Circle...like it almost gets redundant, and I think there's some empty space I could work with. I will definitely keep you posted on more stuff I put up. Thanks again!

CRSIDE .COM wrote on November 13, 2008:

sorry for the delayed response spikey..i agree with you all the way...i may not be entering any more contest for a while unless its an artist that really pulls me into it....that mariah thing was brutal..lol...

AFfriKkAaa / Vol wrote on November 11, 2008:

Whats gud Spikey Jay. I liked ur Mariah mix & thought I'd check out ur page...You're mixes are probably the best I've heard on indaba...real crisp! Respect...

Tassili Bond wrote on October 17, 2008:

Hey Spikey thanks for the support man. You can vote as many times as you want. This contest is so much easier the the Mariah contest. And it's bigger too. There's nearly 50,000 people in it! But I've cracked the top 1000 in three weeks. You should be on wemix.com too. This would be a piece of cake for you. Are you on reverbnation.com? If not you should check them out. Take care man.

Parry K. wrote on October 12, 2008:

Hey Spikey! I'm lovin the clarity and balance of all your mixes. If you don't mind, checking out some of my tracks and leaving some feedback on the mixes, just trying to learn as much as possible to reach my goal. Thanks a lot.

Tassili Bond wrote on October 11, 2008:

Hey Rockmaster, listening to all your tunes now.

Alone: Good production! everything in perfect balance. The song has a nice build up from gentle and sweet to rockin. The only thing I would have done is add something percussive in the first minute and a half. A subtle combination of tambourine, clap and perhaps closed hihat nicely arranged could do the trick. Charley is great on the vocs!

Of our yesterdays: kickin right away! I must admit: don't really listen a whole lot to this style, but it has a good sound.

Cash Cash rmx: sounds good and commercial. Are the snaps and cowbell yours? it has that tween sound again!

Back in Spades: has pro written all over it.

He said, she said: hit record? def a pop radio tune. Only thing I could suggest is to add some supporting sounds in the verses other than the guitar and drums. I'm thinking pad/effect/synth sounds to fill it up a bit. Still without it, it sounds just fine. The chorus/bridge parts sound perfect.

Died in your arms: pro mix. maybe the vocal could have been a bit louder at the parts with the power chords.

Late show is a good production although it's not my style. I like the ending though. Nice heavy guitars.

Thank you is a nice tune. the mix sounds perfect. As a professional coffee-holic I can say that this is something you'd expect to hear at your local Starbucks.

My faves: IBLULT RMX, Alone and He Said, She Said.

Brian F. wrote on September 7, 2008:

hey spikey thanks for getting back man 8) You've recorded everything really well that's for sure, mix, compression an eq are all tight and most importantly it works musically in that it has a bounce. and now for a criticism..... or maybe not because it may work in your favour depending on what the judges REALLY have in mind as their ideal candidate. I don't know if you DJ at all but to me the vocal doesn't sound with the track, don't get me wrong it's synced perfectly and it's in key with music that works with it, BUT the DJ in me complains that it sounds like when 2 seperate records are perfectly matched, there's just something a little detached about it. This could work in your favour big time if the original producer decides that they want the original vocal capture untouched if possible, then you win. I think you're 1 of 3 likely winners, the other 2 being Luke Moellman and Nando Padoan, best of luck man and thanks again for listening B....now back to watching my 6 week old daughter being cute 8)
