re --> mixes...

initially when i was first approached to do this contest i agreed to it pretty quickly.  in retrospect i think my gung ho-ness came out of insecurity. you know..like when you don't want someone to see how you might really feel about a certain sitch. Instead of showing vulnerablity in the moment a person might pretend to be unaffected, laugh matters off, or just react in a overly dramtic joyful way.   Point is, it took a while for me to understand what was really going on here! To overstand that there are amazing musicians all over the world in basements and studio shrines alike!. Which i think most people with record deals know but to stay true to a quote from A-plus of Souls of Mischeif "if you really dope why ain't you signed yet'? i think that line stuck with me over the years.  i must confess then that  i too have bought into the idea that only certain people matter musically- commercially?.  To some extent the cream will rise to the top. Nature is not exactly fair, and some people get dished out gifts in very large amounts.

i guess what i am trying to say from an ego perspective is. I am happy i did this. Mostly to observe the battle that occured inside me, which obviously came from seeing 'the music' as 'my music'.  Don't get me wrong, I do believe i am the channeler of these songs and ideas. However, for now- i see music as a LANGUAGE. A vocabulary that  people can take apart and re-asemble them to form sentances of their own, which is exactly what is happening here! HEY! Imagine the dude who first created the Alphabet? I doubt it was one dude..  ha ha.. but you understand where i am going with this ....right? i am sure there was a very specific purpose for the learly lexicon but i highly doubt they could have prophesied the metaphore..  and it the letters being put together like this;

"you fold like Japan fu tons of fan while i design a plan

to make a rapper step like a pedes trian'

- Black THought

So yeah..  this has been a life changing experienc and i thank everyone for expressing themselves

did peoplesteal my voice, sounds and spirit to concoct music of their own?
maybe?

but...

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I want whatever Nick R. is taken. :)
You taking happy pills, prozack, or whatever people in the USA be taking these days?
Oh, and I would suggest getting your ears cleaned out too, because you´re not hearing correctly at all. I mean you gotta be deaf. :)
Now give me some of them pills, so I can see everything through rose colored glasses like you do. :) lol

Once again an artist bails out of making comments. I really wish K-OS had filled out the comment sections. It would have been really interesting to hear the rationale behind the choices he made.

Do1 R. wrote on February 26, 2009:

Tassili....of course he did..what do you really think he could say? Something like well, after I worked on these tracks for weeks before the contest is over I have the track I want? Or, after we fix the timing, the notes, the mix, these other 9..they will be ok? I seriously think that this whole mess could have been avoided...music is subjective...so let's say he loved a punk rock version of any of his songs, and the timing, notes, and mix was tight...who could complain? Not me. Again, music is subjective, production is not..

Wow, there's some pretty shitty people in this community. I came here and found out about the K-OS contest late, unfortunately... however the attitude is absolutely absurd. Your music wasn't selected. Big deal. Move on with your life, and quit crying about how "better" yours is than someone elses... what an embarrassment. All I've read from the people complaining here is "YOUR CHOICE IS ONLY GOOD IF YOUR PICKING MINE OTHERWISE IT SUCKS WAAAAH :( :( :(" I'm almost embarrassed I registered in this community in the first place if this is how you treat someone who's offered a great opportunity to people who wouldn't otherwise have had it.

someone needs to do a remix contest for some of these sore attitudes lol

DICARLO PRODUCTIONS wrote on February 27, 2009:

Anyone seen Nick R? I´m still looking for those pills. :) I think nikkita b must have hooked up with him for sure. :) lol Listen, I had no intentions of winning this contest at all, because I understood it was a Mixing Contest, and not a Remix Contest, so I entered a Mix, and not a Remix. My Mix however is better than the mix on the K-OS My Space page, which is the mix from his soon to be released CD, and I would have thought that K-OS would have chosen my Mix for his actual CD, (not the bonus remix CD) because it´s a much better mix. But I had no intentions of winning the Remix contest, because as I said, my track was a Mix and not a Remix. I came in at #34, which was fine, considering it wasn´t a Remix. :)
However, there are some very talented remix artists here, and some that can Mix well too.
But in my opinion, none of those artist´s tracks were winners in this contest, because not only were
the winning Remixes poorly done, they were also poorly mixed and mastered, and will have to be done again to appear on any CD. I´m sorry, but I´m only being honest. I run a very successful online production business, and I do mixes and masters for artists all over the world, and make a good living from it as well, which is why I don´t have time to collaborate here with the many offers I´ve received. I´d love too, but I just don´t have the time. Nor did I have the time to do more than 1 mix for this contest. I made over 4,000 € in January from my production business, so losing $1,000 in a contest is a joke. It´s not about the money, it´s the principal. All I´m saying is, if the winning Remixes had been good, (which they weren´t) and produced well (which they weren´t either) I would have no problem with who won this contest.
My comments have not been about WAAAAH, I DIDN`T WIN THE CONTEST, because as I said, I entered a VERY GOOD MIX, BUT NOT A REMIX. :) I do however do Remixes as well, and they´re a lot better than anything that won in this contest. I could never charge my clients money for anything that sounded remotely like any of the winning remixes, and I don´t charge anywhere near $1,000. :) lol
Once again, all I have expressed here has been my honest professional opinion.
You can check my music here, or my My Space pages, and you won´t find any out of sync beats, off key harmonies, or badly mixed, mastered, or produced productions.
I can´t say the same for the winners of this contest.
I rest my case.

Added; nikkita b, If you see Nick R, tell him I´m looking for him. :)
Those pills must be good. :)

DICARLO PRODUCTIONS wrote on February 27, 2009:

PS; You know, I just looked on nikkita b´s page here, and it´s TOTALLY BLANK. :) LOL
Not a song, a friend, a contact or a comment to be found. lol
I wouldn´t be surprised if she wasn´t one of the winners using a fake account. :) lol
I´ve seen this same BS many times before. It´s pretty hard to fool me. :)
Maybe I´m wrong, but I doubt it. :) lol

DICARLO, seriously man, get over yourself. Are you kidding me with posting your credentials and how much money you make with your world renowned mixes? Did you seriously say your "Mix" was better than the one posted on his MySpace page? Im sure with all of your expertise you know that a MySpace track is not a very good reference to begin with, right? My question is, what pills are YOU taking? I want some of what you got. With your attitude, Id probably have a Grammy by now, even if it was only imagined. For someone who is as gifted and as busy as you are, you sure have a lot of time to spend with us amateurs on Indaba? Dont you know we all aspire to be like you one day? Be easy man.

JALYN > wrote on February 27, 2009:

btw - I checked your music. Ive got some q-tips if you want to borrow some?
Planet DICARLO seems like a nice place...

DICARLO PRODUCTIONS wrote on February 27, 2009:

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I´m sure I´ve got some Q-Tips for you as well. :) lol
Yoh, I´m not putting myself above you or anyone else here. Just stating my professional opinion as I said. I live from music, and only music. Do you? If so, great. Wonderful. I´m happy for you. :)
And I didn´t compare the mix on K-OS´s My Space with my WAV file, I compared it with a 128 mp3. OK? And mine was better, and his rap even seemed more on point. Simple as that.
I stopped doing verbal combat with people on forums a long time ago.
So, if you´ve got a problem with me, message me, and we´ll sort it out. OK?
Thanks.

All the best to you.

Every post of yours sounded pretty arrogant to me. Your verbal combat must have just stopped minutes ago then because you clearly left two comments today...
All Im saying is this; if you are so great at what you do, you could have simply reached out privately to everyone who entered the contest and offered your professional services like someone who lives from music. Instead, you took it upon your glorious self to show everyone just how superior you are. Your work should speak for itself. If you have to boast about it to people, you lose. If you have to back it up with how much money you make, your credibility goes out the window. I dont have a problem with you, I think you are hilarious actually. I just wanted to let you know what I thought of your posts. Youve made it clear publicly how you feel, no need to message you in private about it now.
The quality of a 128 mp3 is still inferior...

Tassili Bond wrote on February 27, 2009:

I think the biggest irony of the K-OS comp is that so many people assumed that because the artist would decide the outcome that it would be smooth sailing. Not so. There has never been a backlash quite like this. Maybe the voting thing wasn't so bad after all. At least then you respected the finalists hustle if nothing else. So there were not so many objections. I guess all we can do now is congratulate the winners and move on to the next comp.

OMM ONLINE MIXING AND MASTERING wrote on February 27, 2009:

JAYLN,

Sorry to hear you´re having a problem with DICARLO. He´s really a good guy, and often offers help to many people. And you´re wrong, because he did offer to help fix the winning remixes, well actually I offered that in an earlier post here. But I couldn´t have offered that help without his approval, because DICARLO owns the company.

Best wishes,
Thomas (OMM Team)

JALYN > wrote on February 27, 2009:

Tassili, I completely agree with you man. I just wasnt expecting peeps to call out remixes and straight disrespect them. Im all in for a little friendly competition, but damn, you know?

OMM - Im not having a problem with the owner. He might be the greatest guy in the world, but offering to fix the remixes and then publicly stating how awful they are and how much of a better job he would have done isnt very constructive or helpful now is it? If this is your idea of selling your services to people, I think you guys need to work on how you go about getting business.

JALYN > wrote on February 27, 2009:

Thomas, I just re-read your original posts. Funny how you went from "no one will buy it", "you couldnt give it away" and "throwing away money on some BS" to being so cordial and sincerely offering your much needed help. Say it like you mean it and stick with what you say man.

Kian K. wrote on February 28, 2009:

Jalyn, congratulation's man, Your ear's are fine..Id give you a Qtip but I dont know the guy from tribe called quest. I have no idea why your arguing with the CEO of a myspace page; but I understand you wanting people to respect the time and effort you put into your remix. I wish you continued success.

DICARLO PRODUCTIONS wrote on March 1, 2009:

JALYN, My apologies Fam.
Didn´t realize you were one of the winners. Definitely the best track of winning remixes.
The beat´s in sync, the key is correct, and the mix is good. More than I can say for the others.

Kian K,

Tassili,
How come your comments keep disappearing?
This is the 2nd or 3rd comment you posted that has disappeared. :(
Guess Indaba didn´t like them?!.
You weren´t cussing or anything, just speaking your opinion, and the truth.
Strange.

Dicarlo I actually took the last one down. I just feel like at this point it's time to turn the page. While it's true that there are many of us who question K-OS' motives there is nothing we can do about it now. But basically what I said was that I hope that in the future artists take their job as judge more seriously. And since they are being handed a boatload of free remixes the least they could do is take a few minutes to tell us why they like the picks they make. If Yo-Yo Ma can make the time then I don't see any logical reason why anyone else can't. I love this site. And I dig the people who run it. If nothing else I hope Indaba learned a lesson from this. We may not be super producers or stars but the people in this community are no fools either. In the future the artists who want to have these comps should come correct or don't even bother. And for the record I don't believe that any artist, K-OS included, should be shielded from criticism. Especially when it is well deserved.

What would be cool is to do a mega remixes release of the Creative Commons mixes we have done and throw it up as a .torrent for the world! HAHA!
