TEEK OF THE WEEK #7
"SHAME" by FELSITE
Once again I’m amazed with the material I’m getting every week! There are a lot of talented people in this community and I love hearing all the styles and creative songs I’m getting. This week is a cool song called SHAME.
1) Intro: Man this brings me back to the 80’s! Excellent voice Felsite! I really loved how you have just the kick and your voice for the first 4 bars of the song, you have a good voice that can stand alone! I also liked when you used a couple samples of your voice before the keys come in. This is a good intro because the listener doesn’t know how you are going to start the first verse, which puts the listener on the edge of their seat waiting to hear where you are going next! They are definitely not going to change the station here! Great job! I also love the reverb and delay you used, it’s exactly what they used back in the 80’s! The quality of recording is also good, it’s a little bit boomy but clean.
2) 1st VERSE: All the instruments coming in here in the first verse really bring this verse in with a BAM! The lyrics are great and once again your voice is so good, you sound just like the big bands of that era! The main keyboard sound sounds like a Korg M1 or an old Roland synth, which adds a great element to the song. I like that you have a background vocal in to build the verse but I would have waited to do this until the second verse. Now you stop all of the instruments except the bass to tease your listener and surprise them with the chorus. This is great songwriting.
3) CHORUS: The melody of the chorus is really very memorable, which is great. It’s so good that it does not bother me that you have the same amount of instruments here that you had in the verse, normally I wouldn’t recommend that, but you attack the chorus vocally so well that you really do feel the song is going to another level.
4) 2nd VERSE: Now that I’m listening even more to your 2nd verse I see that you do not put a harmony vocal in at all, which is good. It would be ok if you did put the harmony in the 1st verse and not the 2nd, either way it works! It sounds like you have been doing this for a while, the sound is great and you are on the right path with this song.
5) BRIDGE AND LAST CHORUS: I like that you bought in the new vocal effect here by using an Auto Tune style effect. Great break down as well, you allow yourself to again have somewhere to go when you get to the last chorus. The last chorus is awesome, it sounds like you’re hitting them with everything you have leading to another breakdown. You do break it down again for the ending and using that auto tune effect is very effective!
OVERALL: The 80’s sound really brought me back, but that aside, your producing, arrangement, and vocals are excellent for this type of music. I also think it is clever how you broke down and built back up during the song to keep the listener from being “bored!” Also using the auto tune effect brought in the new with the old, which added a new effect to your already great voice. I loved listening to this song and I feel that your song would reach a broader span of listeners in Europe. “Shame” would be a great radio song Europe! Felsite you just have been TEEKED! I really enjoyed teeking this song. Thank you! I’ll see you all next week! Remember it’s all about the music!

WOW!!! What can we say?
Thank you so much.
Both myself and Jeff are extremely grateful that you picked "Shame" to TEEK this week.
It always amazes us how in depth your critiques are and how you tune into, and explain about parts of the music that most other people don't even notice.
We have been together now as a duo for a year, after meeting here at Indaba and after our 1st couple of tracks we realized that we had a very 80's sound so just went with it. We love 80's synthpop and bands such as Depeche Mode and The Human League so to be likened to the big bands of that era is a massive compliment as that is exactly what we are trying to do. We're attempting to bring Synthpop back and give it a slightly (but not too much) contemporary twist; which you hit upon when speaking about the autotuned parts.
Frank, We thank you and prostrate ourselves before you for such an amazing TEEK. LOL.
Thanks again

At 0:45 the 80's romance comes through most with the pushy vocal "It's a shame...".
