TEEK OF THE WEEK #10

SONG:

PEOPLETREE FUNKYBRASS

MEMBER:
MARCO “DONMAX” EGELHOFER

Wow! What a week in pop music over here in the states! The American Music Award’s were wild. We had no citing of Kanye because Taylor Swift said her acceptance speech from London! Jennifer Lopez fell during her performance but like a pro she did not miss a beat! And Rihanna came out with an album this week about how pissed off she is about what happened between her and Chris Brown! Things are heating up in the world of pop music! Let’s take a listen to this week’s teek! The name of this funky song is PEOPLETREE FUNKYBRASS.

1)    INTRO:  This sounds like a real live band playing here, but I think it’s a sample that is nice and clean. I like the audience clapping first and then the keys come in with the guitar, drums and bass. It’s a great way to start a live show and get people up on there feet. This is a good intro Marco.

2)    1st VERSE: I absolutely love this groove! It’s a great funky groove and the rapping reminds me of Grand Master Flash. This brings me back to when Rap started! I love it! You definitely are keeping the listener’s attention. Your recording is very clean and the guitar comes in less to make room for the rap. This is good because you are taking out something to let the listener know you are in the verse.

3)    CHORUS: Now the horns come in like in a Tower of Power or Earth, Wind and Fire song, and it hits you like a ton of bricks. This is the way you hit people in the face with music and let them know where you are in the song! Repeating the same horn part between the lyric “from a drop of blood” is also a great way to let us know where you are in the song.

4)    INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE: This is good because I like having some kind of break or interlude between verses and this sounds great, but when the muted trumpet comes in it is way too hot and kind of muffled. I would also add some strings into the background here.

5)    SECOND VERSE: I like this a lot, not only did you take out some instruments but you also put the megaphone effect on the rap to make the second verse different than your first verse. These are the kind of things that you should do in a second verse.                                                                                                                             * (This is where you can be creative and try variations of the melody or add new effects like Marco did.)

6)    SECOND CHORUS: It’s the same as the first chorus which is not bad but again when the trumpet part came in this time it started off at a perfect level and clear but then you had the same problem again with it being too loud and muffled. It sounds like that’s the way you wanted it, but personally I would have kept it clean.

7)    Breakdown and OUTRO: I like the breakdown but what I really like is the question and answer rapping that you have going on, this is great! The only thing I would have done differently is have the first rapper panned to the left and then the next rapper panned to the right so you can use that kind of effect in a going back and forth manner. In the outro you add in a Sax, solo which really gives the song a 70’s funk type feel. It’s a good way to end the song and also makes your song more authentic.

OVERALL: Marco, you put a very nice piece together. As I said in passed teeks that putting samples together like this and making it a whole song is not easy to do but you seem to have it down. This piece would be good for a music supervisor looking for a retro piece of music from the 70’s era. Marco you just have just been teeked!

HAPPY HOLIDAY: I would like to wish everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving a happy and safe one! For those who do not, let’s all be thankful that we all share a common love; we can all create and love MUSIC! I’ll see you all next week!

Thank you Frank for your critics! Yes, the rapper have been free voices from the indaba music contest, I thought' you'd know them... : )

Yes, I used some samples, but most parts I played with the keyboards in; like the drums, bass, keys etc. Trumpets are samples... and they sound muffled, because they are like this in the sample...I know.
Thank you and greetings from snowy Switzerland. Happy new year!
